Micro Star MS-7061 Ver 1.0
« on: 12-March-07, 20:51:21 »

Hi , Im hoping to put a graphics card in my girlfriends computer. Its a cough cough 'Time' PC and on opening it up it comes with a Micro Star MS-7061 Ver 1.0 motherboard. The board has 1 AGP slot i think , 2 ddr slots and 3 PCI slots. My girlfriend says she bought it 2-3 years ago. Its only got an ISO - 400PP 300w power supply and only 1 stick of Kingston 256 Mb RAM. I dont have the CPU that is fitted and i think the sound is onboard. There is a card in one of the PCI slots but it is small and has no molex connection. Might be a modem or LAN card. Anyway with the overall quality and lack of real power what wouldd be the best GRAPHICS CARD for this PC. I dont even know if the motherboard suports 8x agp , 4x agp or 2x agp. Also im concerned that any card i buy my be too power hungry for the PSU. Basically all she want is to play some half decent games, she realises that it is imposssable to play the likes of Supreme commander on a pc like hers but I still feel the pc is worth a cheap upgrade to play some  first person shooters or some cool car racing games etc etc even if they might be titles from a few years ago. All help and advice is much appreciated as this problem has lots to consider and as students we dont have the money to pour into the latest trick hardware so need the right choice for this pc. Thank you all again. Oh any other info required will be posted upon request. I just dont know what else you may need .

Should be the KM4M-V

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=610

Supports AGP X8...
Can you check what cpu it's got? That really has an impact in deciding what Vga card to get...
It's a socket A board, and there are socket A cpu's from WAAAY old (wich will play hardly any newer games and should be paired with a low end VGA card) and there's socket A cpu's wich are fairly new and paired with a good gpu could still handle some nice games...

I'd definately recommend a RAM upgrade tho, 512Mb minimum.

OK Ive checked my girlfriends PC and it has an AMD Sempron 2400 + 1.67 Ghz CPU with only 192 MB of Kingston KVR333x64c25/256 ram. I had assumed the 256 refered to 256 mb ram but the system says theres only 192 Mb detected. I realise its a low end pc but seems capable of being upgraded into a 'fairly' decent PC. Again id still like to know what your ideas or suggestions about what GFX card to put into this rig are. Thanks for your time and advice.

The board has onboard VGA wich takes a piece of main system ram (64 Mb in this case) Leaving only 192Megs remaining of the 256Mb installed...

You definately need to add more ram to play anything decent - 512Mb minimum , perhaps a gigabyte.
That sempron 2400 Will be the main bottleneck (slowest part) for most games, so spending much on a powerfull VGA card is a waste (as it will spend all its time waiting for the CPU)

a nvidia 7300GT or a ATI X1300 Agp card should be a match for that cpu

Should be able to play doom3 , quake4 , half life2 etc in the lower settings (but deffo need that RAM)...

What games are your girlfriend interested in? ...Oh, please take the question the right way!! :fear:  ;-))

As been stated, there are a few bottle-necks. She and you seem a bit dissatisfied with the board. As you can't turn it into a gaming monster, is there any use throwing more money at it?

A bit off: There are several boards with that name, but there is very little difference between them:

The real downside in my opinion is the poor manual, and limited amont of options in BIOS.

Ok Well Ive just had an idea  My current system is a P4 3.0ghz with 2 gig ram and a 6800 GT gfx card. Ok its a little old theses days but manages to play most games atm reasonabally well. Now if i was to donate my card to my girlfriend what would be a good card which would not only replace my existing 6800 GT but also improve upon its performance while also not make me spend massive amounts of dosh ?

I'd pick a geforce 7600GS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127219, should be a good match for that p4 as long as you don't overdo it on the extreme resolutions etc.
ATI's entry for that pricerange is the X1650pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814241040, but can't comment on it's performance, havn't tried one yet.

Can't resist saying again that your GF's pc still needs more ram, that sempron+geforce6800 will have the toughest time running any game decently with only 256Mb...

Good luck.

The 7600 ! Hmm What will it be like compared to the 6800GT. Hugely better performance ? Or only slightly better. Why do you recomend the 7600 and not the 7800 ?

Because your p4 isn't fast enough to push a 7800 card to its fullest potential, and thus a waste of money, a 7600 will be a better match imo
