X58 Platinum BIOS 1.4 failure
« on: 24-April-09, 14:37:09 »

Hello,

I updated my X58 Platinum from the supplied BIOS to 1.4. The update installed successfully (using the USB M-flash method).

However, I get no POST (no video) and the computer keeps rebooting regularly. I have tried to recover the BIOS using SATA DVD drive (in the Intel controller SATA ports) and USB memory by renaming the 1.3 BIOS file to AMIBOOT.ROM and copying it to the media, rebooting and pressing Ctrl+Home. I have also tried resetting CMOS and boot with a single memory stick with no success.

The BIOS was apparently removed from MSI site shortly after I flashed it, was the BIOS image defective? And more importantly, is there any way to recover it?

Have you done >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord after BIOS update?
If not do it.
Also do it before attempt BIOS recovery.

Retry again with both media CD/DVD and USB key, but do NOT rename the BIOS to AMIBOOT.ROM[leave original name]

Thank you for your quick reply.

I followed the steps (tried with and without renaming, both CD and USB, cleared CMOS both w/ and w/o cord). I tried also with older BIOS (1.0), didn't work either. I tried also different SATA ports. The CDROM activity doesn't seem to differ whether or not the SATA is connected or not (ie. the BIOS recovery code isn't probably even accessing it).

Also, is this BIOS update (1.4) known to brick motherboards? Since it disappeared from MSI site shortly after I'd flashed it in.

Try one more time use BIOS file A7522IMS.100 [copy it as is to the USB Key FAT formatted]
and >>Clear CMOS Guide<< before attempt recovery.
Also leave PC for at least 5 minutes. Recovery will[can] start after few minutes, it need a time.

I reformatted the USB stick (FAT), copied the file and tried that. (Unplugged and switched off PSU, waited ~1min, pressed CMOS switch, waited some more, booted with Ctrl+Home pressed). I tried both renaming the file and leaving the name as is. I also tried pressing Ctrl+Home after the keyboard lights had flashed once. I also tried without GPU. Still no success.

Thank you for your help. Is there any information available why the update was pulled from MSI site? (It could be of help when dealing with the store I bought the mobo from, otherwise I have to wait 2 weeks for them to repeat the same steps that I did and then send it to MSI or replace it.)

i had complately the same thing last week,i tried everything whatever i could find.
today i get the post screen, how?
i found that while trying bios recovery

first clear cmos like svet said,
then i left all ide sata parts only my gpu staying on my board then,..
i have these rams
2gb buffalo ddr2 800
1gb axega ddr2 800
first i left buffalo and restarted pc,no post no bip
changed ram to other slot,no post no bip
then left that ram and put the other 2gb and post screen came
then i flashed bios manually again
it wrote the same thing like 1st time

i get these 2 different msgs,i wasnt get them before
HDCP: output msg Rom Hole Protect!
CMOS checksum destroyed

and when i restart pc i get this error:
-CMOS Checksum Bad
i go in bios setup with f1 and set optimized defaults and do other settings what i use

i cant use my 1gb ram now
i installed xp and i will try the 1.3 bios rom now

note:i think the problem is new ami flasher ,because there was another flasher in old versions 'afud412'
but with 1.4 coming a new flasher 'afud4281',
i dont know where to report that
(sry for my bad english)

Why aren't you using the forum flasher?

>>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<<

:(

Happened to me over the weekend as well with v1.4. The bios was defo on the MSI site friday so damn you MSI.

I didn't use the M-flash but the other bootable usb flash method.

tried the recovery method as on the MSI site but the x58 doesn't have a FDD and I didn't have a ps/2 keyboard.

gonna see if the MSI HQ flash tool will help.

if not, it's back to online retailer to test and prolly back to MSI then.

epic fail msi :(

Kaimera, your post is simply to bash and not offer anything of help. This thread is not your soapbox nor for you to hijack.

I wasn't trying to hijack Mike; a quick google for v1.4 problems brought up this thread.

I was merely pointing out the OP wasn't the only one with problems with v1.4 which as of this past friday was on the website and I've gone thru the steps outlined in this thread to no avail.

I wasn't aware that I had to post a 'help' to reply. My mistake I guess.
