790FX-GD70: Unlock CPU Core missing
« on: 11-November-09, 16:51:01 »

I just saw the advertisement about the "unlock CPU core" on the MSI website.
I thought i would try that out, since i have a Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition processor.
The website and even the new bios description says, that the newest bios (v1.6) for my motherboard (790FX-GD70) supports CPU core unlocking.

Ok, i updated my bios from v1.5 to v1.6.
Then i entered the bios... and there is no "unlock CPU core" option in the Cell Menu
Do i miss something here? Do i need to enable/disable other options to access CPU core unlocking?
Or is this feature limited to some CPU types?
I'm not overclocking my system, so the settings in the Cell Menu are on default.

On the BIOS page it states this: The success of unlocking AMD CPU may still vary according to the AMD CPU use.

Could be the option is missing because your CPU hasn't got a 4th core?
I don't know, just guessing.

Im not sure either, but there are reports outthere that say that AMD is lasercutting the extra cores on the X2/X3 range, because of the unlocking of them.
So they physically remove any connections to other cores or the core itself and thus you cant unlock it, cause they rendered it useless and/or its not there anymore.
This has to do with the fact that most of the cores that are disabled are flawed.
Dunno if thats the case with your for sure though, you might get lucky and get the extra core to run, but there is NO guarantee it will work flawlessly.

Flashed the newest, v1.7 bios today and now i have the "Unlock CPU Core" option in the Cell Menu ;-))
Ofc i tried to unlock my CPU right away
The unlocked CPU has been identified as "AMD Phenom II X4 20" (from AMD Phenom II X3 720).

Running Prime95 25.9 x64 (ftp://mersenne.org/gimps/) for 2 hours now without any errors
Are there any other programs i should use for testing?

I have four cores so I can't tell for sure but if you end up flashing back to 1.6 for any reason, look under "Core Control" in the cell menu.  That's where cores are enabled and disabled.
