I recently installed the OnOne Photo Essentials plug in for Photoshop Elements 8 and noticed that launching one of the programmes causes PSE8 to crash. OnOne support have informed me that to solve this issue I will need to install a GL supported video card. At the moment I have NVIDIA Geforce FX5200 with the latest driver for XP which evidently is not GL supported.

Does anyone know if a GL supported graphics card will fit or work on this board? (MSI 865PE-Neo2 Mainboard) Any suggestions on a cheap one that will work?

Has anyone else experienced programme crashes with a non GL supported card and are there any work arounds instead of replacing the card?

Kind Regards
Chris

Need to ask, is the GL you refer to same as OpenGL? If so, the problem might be elsewhere, as FX5200 does support OpenGL and quite good it looks like, from reading on the web. Some reports of less compatibility depending on nvidia's driver version, sorry can't help more.

e.g like http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=59291&mode=threaded&pid=324964

An entry level FX5200 is far from the best for Photoshop work but it certainly does support OpenGL. Try it without the mixed RAM you have installed, remove the 2x512 for a test.

I checked the report from OnOne software and evidently I need a card that supports Open GL 2.0 to stop the crash. Does my FX 5200 support Open GL 2.0 or will I have to replace the card? I am using thelatest driver 175.19. How can I Know if Open GL2 is working?

OnOne essentials 3 is the only programme on my system that has a problem with this card. I don't know if there are any other work arounds.

Kind Regards
Chris

I don't know what year OpenGL 2.0 came out but I do know the FX5200 has been around since about April 2003.

Best I can find is that FX 5200 supports OpenGL 1.5 and earlier. This info is from NVIDIA website. It looks like you need a newer graphics card for what you are doing.

Thanks for the help. I found a NX6200AX-TD256H AGP card TV/DVI (256 Ram) in a shop locally and am looking into thepossibility. Out of interest will a better graphics card improve the performance of Photoshop Elements? I ask because it is a still image programme.

Kind Regards

Are you sure that has OpenGL 2.0 support? The 6200's I looked up only support up to 1.5 like your 5200. I think you need to go up to at least a 7300 for 2.0 support from what I've been able to find so far.

I agree with Henry.  Some 6000 series cards can run Open GL 2.0 but not as well as a 7000 series.

I appreciate the advice. I checked and the NX6200 was advertised as supporting openGL 1.5. Are there any recommended 7000 series AGP cards that will fit on my board?

Kind Regards

This costs about the same as a 7300 series card but offers more IMHO.  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127366

Greyone, that's a PCI express card.  He needs an AGP card.

For Nvidia, the 7600GS and GT support OpenGL 2.0

The 2600 ATI AGP cards will perform better: http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=137&cat3_no=173

The limiting factor may be your PSU, but either card needs about 25A on a +12V rail for a minimally configured system.  You might just squeak by.

OOPS!   rolleyes_anim Thanks for catching that Mike.  Chris, Mike has brought up another possibility for a video card if you  want to look at what ATI has to offer in an AGP Open GL video card.

What Mike links to for ATI and this one for NVIDIA 7600 are it for the latest MSI offers for AGP.

 http://global.msi.eu/index.php?func=prodpage2&maincat_no=130&cat2_no=136&cat3_no=139

Good luck trying to find anything suitable in AGP in the eastern Med area. Obviously we are only going to recommend MSI but being on that island you have to settle for whatever you can find. Grin

It's either that or move up to a motherboard that has PCIe and then you will have a large selection of VGA cards to chose from.
