OC GENIE on sandy bridge
« on: 29-February-12, 13:28:49 »

Hello, I'd like to know if using the OC GENIE setting on my P67A-G43 motherboard is going to void the warranty of my i5-2500K?

I like to see my CPU going from 3.3Ghz to 4.2Ghz with 1 easy step, but is there a way to make it perform slower when idle? Because I use this pc for programmation and studying, I don't need it at 4.2ghz all the time only for gaming :).

And does OC Genie also overclock my memory?

Thank you for the help.

What memory do you have ?
Perhaps you can provide your full system spec. >>Posting Guide<<
If you only want X42, then all you need to do is to change the core multis in the CPU Features sub menu.Change them all to 42, save and restart. The PC will run at 1,6 in idle and at 4,2 under load. As simple as that. Once you have done that, then we can discuss mem overclocking, which is more a theoretical ego boost than anything else.  ;D
The best OC Genie is the person doing it. No button can replace that.

Thank you Bernhard for the friendly reply, I appreciate it!

Here is my system spec :
Window7  64bit
Intel i5-2500k 3.3GHz (for now)
CM Hyper 212 evo (push-pull)
MSI P67A-G43 (MS-7673)
G.skill 2x2Go DDR3 1333MHz
Radeon 6950 1GB
Antec Truepower New 650W

It's my first own build computer and I'd like to tweak it a bit for fun (but safely) and I think overclocking might be a good thing to start with.  So far I have change the timing on my memory by default it was set to 9-9-9-24 now they are at 7-7-7-21 (not exactly sure about what they do).

Can I reach more then x42 with only changing the multiplier? Or do I need to tweak the voltage to reach higher?

If using OC Genie you should not change anything in BIOS for CPU and RAM as that can adversely affect it's proper operation. Do like Bernhard said.

From my own testing you should not need 2 fans push-pull on that 212+. The push thru is sufficient. There was no difference in temperature between 1 fan or 2 fans in my rig. Keep the 2nd fan for a spare.

4.2-4.3 is just fine for everyday use and there is no need to increase voltage.

Henry mentioned a very important fact. You use either OC Genie or manual tweaks. Never both.
Most Sandy Bridge board/CPU combos will allow a CPU OC range of X42 to X45 with all else left on Auto. You need to test how far yours will go. Increase them 1 step at a time and test in Windows with Prime95 for stability. Monitor your core temps at the time of testing. ~80C under full load in Prime95 should be the limit you don't really want to exceed.
At some stage your PC will blue screen. At that point you reduce the multis by 1 and leave it there, unless you intend to manually start tweaking voltages.
Whilst OC'ing the CPU, leave the memory at stock, else you won't know which component is causing the BSOD. Get your CPUs max first as that is where the real performance gain is.
Memory OC'ing yields very little in overall system performance gain, in fact it can cause more instabilities and troubles than what it's worth, especially tighter timings.
Once you have found a stable CPU OC, by all means tweak your memory, but not before having found the CPU stable OC.

Thank you both for your reply!

I only changed the CPU ratio in the bios to X43, it works just fine in windows but I have the same problem as with OC Genie when I open CPU-z all the cores are at 4.3GHz idle. Maybe I did something wrong in the bios?
I forgot to mention, Is there some green power settings I should disable or other setting on the bios? I read many overclocking guide and they talk about settings to enable / disable.

Edit : I tried to change the ratio limit in CPU Features like you said but it won't let me change it (will have to try find the problem tomorow).

You probably are changing the CPU multi and not the core multis, going by your result.
Check your BIOS features again.

Yes I found the error I did in the bios, like you said Bernhard I changed the wrong setting  :bonk: . I found the Core multis yet I can't change it(not sure why) I'll try again an let you know if it works.

I still can't change the core multis alone. I think they are related to Intel Turbo Boost.

I will have to find and read the manual.

You did disable the OC Genie before attempting manual overclocking ?

In that case I suspect your CPU multi has not been reset to default.
Suggest the following.
Do a CMOS clear to get everything back to default.
Then only increase the Core multis.

I did reload default values with F6 in BIOS everything went back to default. Nothing happen when I press enter on core ratio ; just to be sure that I'm at the good menu it is in Overclocking tab, CPU Features, the last lines?

If you are able to access the core ratios and the line is highlighted, use the + or - keys on the num keypad to change those multis.

Glad you are sorted.
Now its testing time for you to see what multi your board/CPU combo can do on Auto. Let us know.
You don't want to manually adjust the voltages as that will inhibit the power saving features on the Sandy Bridge platform.

Just run the default "Blend". All cores will be loaded 100%. Check your temperatures.
If it runs stable for 30 to 60 mins on all the cores, then I doubt you will encounter problems anywhere else.
Use Core Temp or Real Temp to check the temperatures.

Here are the result :

45 minutes - 4.2GHz max temp 59C   8-)) . 4.3GHz - BSOD after 5 minutes  :nooo:.

I guess I'll stay at 4.2GHz for now with all auto :).

And now should I touch my memory also ? Could you help me start with basic knoweldge ?

OK, nothing much to do then. If XMP works as it should, and in your case it does, then leave it alone. That looks correct.
Just a question, when you did your CPU OC, did you have XMP enabled ?
If so, disable XMP, save and restart and then see if you can OC your CPU some more. The CPU will provide you with a lot more gain than the memory in XMP will ever provide.

Oh and do you know if the plastic things on their ram is only for look or does it have a purpose, and if they are removable? I'd like to buy a new 2x2go while they are very cheap but I can't place them in slot #1 because of their height.

Command Rate  is the Delay between chip select and command, or the number of clock cycles needed to send data.
Do a bit of searching on the net. Leave it at 2. 1 will probably introduce instabilities.  Here is a very good reference http://www.techpowerup.com/printarticle.php?id=131   ;D

As for memory, especially 1333, those heatspreaders are more for looks than anything else.
If you want to get more memory, ensure its the same as your current one. Never mix memory.

If you have space problems, then the low profile Corsair models are probably best. You will see them in my signature.

I know that you need the same memory but does size count? For example I want to buy more memory I currently have those http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231439
would buying those http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231440 be a good buy for a total of 12GB ?

or what would you recommand? Would it worth to buy new memory 1600-1866 and remove my old one?

The different density of the mem chips can/may cause instabilities.
I would rather recommend to get a 2 X 4GB kit for now and use that. By all means try the mix but don't be surprised if things don't go as smooth as you wish.
From experience, I also suggest to get low profile memory so as not to have a problem with clearance with an aftermarket CPU cooler.
The Corsair CML8GX3M2A1600C9W would be my recommendation.

There's only 1 thing I'm not sure, on my motherboard details it says ram ; 1333, 1600(OC), 1866(OC), etc. what do they mean by that (OC)? they, by default, don't go 1600 and you have to manually set it ?

The Sandy Bridge integrated memory controller (part of the CPU) natively supports 1333 and 1600 is an overclocked memory setting.
The 1600 memory is stock 1333 memory at 1,5V, however the LP LV Corsair kit has a 1600 XMP profile at 1,35V and normally, the XMP setting in the BIOS will apply this. You can also set it manually.
