P55A-GD65 AHCI HDD Light Issue
« on: 06-April-12, 16:14:03 »

I just installed a P55A-GD65 mobo and enabled AHCI on my 2TB connected to a SATA 3 port.  Prior to changing to AHCI, the HDD indicator LED worked, showing HDD activity.  In Windows 7 x64, there is no longer HDD LED activity whenever the AHCI drive is active.  There is activity whenever my secondary HD is active, which is connected to a SATA 2 port.

Why is this, and is there any workarounds?

Please use correct terminology, SATA III, SATA 6Gb/s, or SATA 6.0, etc.

If the OS was installed when in IDE Mode, you can't switch to AHCI without tweaking the registry, it will not properly boot. That is why the HDD shows no activity. There are a number of tutorials on how to make the necessary changes on the internet.

It is connected to one of the two SATA III ports.  It is a 2TB Sata 6GB/S WD drive.  The registry was changed for a Windows boot and driver install for an AHCI controller.  It works 100% fine in Windows 7 with the exception of no HDD drive LED activity.

Connector for HDD activity LED was not accidentally reversed somewhere along the line or not plugged in all the way?

No, I checked that.  My 'D' hard drive is on the SATA2 connector and the HDD light works with it.  It seems to be an issue when going through the Marvell controller.

Early Marvell SATA III adoption never was a stellar performer (or later even). Have you run HDTune tests when using IDE controller mode and compared results when AHCI was set? I would almost recommend to forget AHCI and return to IDE controller mode. Odds are very little to nothing is gained in AHCI Mode.

I believe you're right.  I'll change it back tomorrow.  I didn't check the performance, but I've read where there's not much difference.

I decided to change it back tonight.  Now using SATA II and my drive LED is functioning normally.  Thanks for the help and suggestions.
