Z77A-GD65 code B4
« on: 13-May-12, 13:34:48 »

Just finished building a new pc with the z77a-65 with a i7 2600 CPU and 16 gb corsair ram.
Normal boot Goes ok, but when I restart with an usb stick attached then the mobo gives me code B4. Nothing else works anymore after that. Even reset is stuck. Only a full off/on is giving me a normal boot again....but each time the system does a restart with the usb attached I get this B4. this is ofcourse not workable.

I already updated my bios but no luck.

Update.
After reset:
No USB attached: B2 - system hangs
bootable USB stick attached: B4 - system hangs
nonbootable USB stick attached: B4 - system hangs

So it always hangs with either B2 or B4 after a reset. Only a cold boot goes okay.

Is this a DOA motherboard?
Anyone with similiar faults?

Check in BIOS if you have Legacy USB support or similar settings enabled already. If not, try enabling these settings and try again.

Re: Z77A-GD65 code B4 ==> now not booting anymore code 55
« Reply #3 on: 14-May-12, 08:23:48 »

Well, it seems that I have much bigger problems now.

After a memory exchange the motherboard does not boot anymore. Only the Power LED on the onboard switch is working but pushing it results in nothing anymore.
Then I put the old memory back, and also then no booting anymore. Dead.

Another powersupply and the mobo came back to life, but only a few seconds, but now at least I got to see code 55, after that it goes rebooting again, and code 55, rebooting, etc. Also no videosignal.
debug-display =>  :worship:

What does that mean, 55, something in the CPU initialisation?

>> Codes <<

So

0x55 Memory not installed

But when I remove the only present RAM module, I got a 22 error (and some beeps!)
I presume it indeed has something to do with the absence of memory:
0x2B Memory initialization.  Serial Presence Detect (SPD) data reading
0x2C Memory initialization.  Memory presence detection
0x2D Memory initialization.  Programming memory timing information
0x2E Memory initialization.  Configuring memory
0x2F Memory initialization (other).

So what's the difference between 55 and 22. I am confused

Please post a more comprehensive component list and what you have tried so far in more detail. With power off, removed the PSU power cord, removed the battery for awhile, cleared CMOS and reset?

Ok. The components I am using are described in my signature. NOTHING else.
With the Be-Quiet it's not booting anymore. (so the B2/B4 error is not interesting anymore)
With an old Chieftec PSU 360W the system IS booting, but is halting @ code 55. After a few seconds, it's restarting automatically.

Full history.
- Cold boot went ok. Installed Windows
- Restarting Windows, or a hard restart went wrong, code B2 or B4 (starting this thread!)
1. To be sure, I flashed the newest BIOS, and cleared the CMOS as described in the manual.
No difference.
2. To exclude memory problems, I tried other memory (Corsair 2 GB XMS3 CMX8GX3M4A1333C9)
From this time, the system boots no more.
Only the cpufan tries to start but immediate fails. The only LED what stays on is the Powerbutton on the motherboard itself.
3. Tried another memory (Kingston HyperX (KHX1600C903K2/8GX)
Only the cpufan tries to start but immediate fails. The only LED what stays on is the Powerbutton on the motherboard itself.
4. Tried resetting CMOS again.
5. Tried all combinations DDR1, DDR2 DDR3 DDR4
6. Got the original Corsair memory back in. Clear CMOS. This memory worked before!!!!
Nothing so far
7. Got an old Chieftec PSU360W
Now the system boots but is halting @ code 55.
I repeated all steps descibed before.
But the endresult stays the same, code 55.

This is the current status.

Just checked the MSI website, there is a memory compability file on http://www.msi.com/file/test_report/TR10_2536.pdf
And my 2 GB Corsair is on it ==> CMX8GX3M4A1333C9
So that rules out "buy a compatible RAM"  :nono:

From reading various posts in other threads, beginning to suspect the PSU's being used are not of adequate quality, amps or something. Recommend to test with a modern +12V single rail.

The used PSU is capable of 18A on a single 12V line. That's a lot more than really nesessary.
How can that be a problem?
Review with a core i7 965 extreme, FULL load (all 8 cores) and just 204 Watt consumption:
http://www.au-ja.de/review-be-quiet-pure-power-l7-9.phtml
Full load is a lot more then just booting the system...
No, it's defintely not the PSU

What I really don't understand is the fact that the "no more boot code 55" problem began after I changed the RAM to the Corsair 2 GB XMS3 CMX8GX3M4A1333C9 one from the compabilitytest.
After that I have a non booting motherboard with just code 55.
Tried everything.
It just makes no sense.
Even returning the system to the previous working hardwarestate didn't work. That's not cool.

Switched motherboard, again code B4. So I thought, the ONLY component I haven't checked was the CPU.
Changed the i7-2600 (Pins were all okay, so were the imprents) for a i3-2100....and my problems are away

Well, my i7-2600 now apparently has a problem and I don't know why so suddenly.
But this problem is "solved".

Check in BIOS if you have Legacy USB support or similar settings enabled already. If not, try enabling these settings and try again.

After some tests...
The 2100 worked fine. No issues. But I was frustated. Called Intel, the gave me a tool to check the i7-2600.
All pass! Strange...

So I tried this time to DISABLE the Legacy USB.
And now the board boots fine. No more B2 or B4 error.
How is this possible?

Small problem - Okay now my USB mouse does not work anymore :bonk: seems logical
But that's no real problem since this a to become a server

As in the codes linked in Reply #4, B2 and B4 are USB related. With the Legacy USB disabled, it makes perfect sense it boots fine, as the offending USB device is not a problem any longer. Most likely the mouse used?

Doesn't make much sense because the 2100 cpu doesn't give me any errors at all.

It's sad to say but I think the i7-CPU is faulty.
Now I have another fault. Beside the fact that I cannot enable Legacy USB, I still sometimes get an A2 error (manual restart then necessary)
But the bigger problem now. When I try to install the supplied Intel VGA driver (from the MSI cd), the system hangs after tryling to load the logon screen. The only video-output that works is the BIOS....after that (Windows) no signal anymore.

Loosing my mind here.  :bonk:

What screen connection are you using ? HDMI ? Have you tried with a standard VGA connection ?
Have you tried with another known working PSU ?
Have you eliminated all possibilities of a short somewhere by removing the board from the case and placing it on a non-conducting surface, i.e. unprinted cardboard or untreated piece of wood?

Tried VGA and HDMI. Also tried booting without VGA or HDMI but the system still freezes (for example I can't start RDP session)

Tried three different PSU's, all the same.

Board is removed from the case and on a wooden table since then but also here no difference.

Now that with the i3 working fine with the USB devices, it does not give you the video output issue as well, right?

Do note that i3 processors have built in video processors in their chips so you will get to utilize the GPU only when it comes to intensive graphics processing.

If so, it does make sense to have Intel to replace your i7 processor.

Yes the i3 cpu did not gave any errors. So the i7 was very likely to be faulty and I did a RMA at Intel.

Good news:
This week I received the new i7 from Intel (VERY fast, just a few days)
All reset-problems now are gone, So no more strange USB problems or codes B2, B4, or A2  :agrees:

The VGA output after install Intel or MSI GMA driver still didn't work, so as a last resort I tried to select and install the *.inf file manually, from within the Device Manager. That worked!
