990FXA-GD80| SPLIT
« on: 03-August-12, 06:36:29 »

Hello,
I'm having problems with my new build.  Can't get Windows 7 to load/install.  Basically, I keep getting slightly different results.  Sometimes it won't even begin to read the DVD.  Sometimes the system stops completely during the windows loading screens (from the DVD).  Sometimes I get the windows splash screen then it freezes or reboots.  I made it to the Windows language screen a couple times then it would freeze or reboot.  And sometimes I even have trouble getting to the BIOS setup screen.
I'm thinking I might have the RAM compatibility problem that was mentioned.....I can't find anything on Corsair's website that says what I bought from Negegg is compatible with the FX processors.
MSI 990FXA-GD80V2  (no Bios sticker....)
AMD FX-8120  3.1 GHz, stock cooler
CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (4 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2133 Desktop Memory Model CMZ16GX3M4A2133C11B
MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card
SeaSonic X750 Gold 750W ATX12V V2.3/EPS 12V V2.91 SLI Ready 80 PLUS GOLD Certified Full Modular Active PFC Power Supply
No overclocking...just trying to get it running first!

I've swapped the RAM around, even tried only running two sticks in various combos trying to rule out one bad stick.
Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

I hope a moderator will split this off as a new thread, as the other one was resolved.
You indeed bought overclocked memory modules and will need to do some manual settings in the BIOS to see if we can make this work.
Only insert one memory module in the slot closest to the CPU or as indicated in your manual.
On boot up, enter the BIOS and manually set your DRAM to run at 1333, manually set the timings to 9.9.9.24 and the CR to 2.
Save and restart and then retry. Do not add any memory until you have done your full OS and driver installations.
Once your system is set up and stable, then you can add the other memory and then start to change the SPD settings to run at DDR3-1600 or 1866.

Hello,
Sorry about adding (hijacking) a closed post...my bad.
Thanks for the suggestion Bernhard.

Ok, here is what I've learned so far......
I was unable to manually change the DRAM settings per Bernhard's suggestion (my fault not his...I'm new at this).
Tried a set of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 memory (2x4GB), no change.  System very unstable and unable to install windows.
Bios on my motherboard was version 11.9, which I thought was current.
Was able to get a copy of 11.11 on a USB drive and load from the M-Flash BIOS Installer
That fixed it (still using the 1600 memory sticks, will try to go back to the oc 2133's later).
Installing all my software now.

More tomorrow if all goes well.

Well, you should be able to set your memory manually now.
Once you have done that, then you can add the other memory and retry at the current 1600 SPD profiles. If you succeed with that, then you can attempt Overclcoking the memory. But that really will be a new thread in the Overclocking section. Your memory controller will determine to a large extent how far you will be able to OC that memory.
The gain from OC'ed memory beyond 1600 is minimal btw.
