Topic: k8n msi motherboard will not enter bios (Read 1210 times)

Ok here is the hardware in the case at the moment

K8n mobo (neo plat)
3000 64 CPU
ati rage 128b (test only tried a700)
1GB Crucual Ram
Antec True Power 380W

All I get is five short beeps, I have reset cmos and still nothing

Please help me :(

Double check your video card. Is it seated completly?
Take it out . Of course diconnect power first then reseat the Video
Try booting with only 1 stick of ram
Let us know how this turns out

Only one stick of ram (1GB)

Tried 3 different graphic cards

On second thought go to your local pc guy and DEMAND an INTEL based system. MSI puts out some really nice P4 and P5 stuff

Might have been an idea. Since I am stuck with what I have, and money is an issue, any ideas of what is wrong with the setup I do have?

It would be a good idea to post a signature with all of your equipment listed. It could be you are a little short on power, what is the voltage on the 12 volt rails of your power supply?

Try with only a old style ps2 keyboard directly connected to the purple ps2 port (no fancy stuff with f-lock keys and such) , no mouse .
No usb connected , power off completely and on again (switch off and disconnect AC , and connect back , switch on )

The Psu is an antec 380W

These are the readings

for the 12v rail its 24A if thats what you needed

The beeps may well have been down to the fancy case, a bog standard case gives me NO BEEPS

If I keep in the memory, video card and cpu with HSF the system shuts down after around 15 secs

If I take out the memory and remove CPU the system stays on but no beeps, no boot

Have you connected all the extra power connectors to the motherboard .
MSI Reminds You...
• All power connectors, ATX1 (24 Pin) & JPW1 (4 Pin, for CPU Power) & PCIE_PW1 (4 pin, for PCI-E VGA) must be attached to this model to ensure operation of the Mainboard.
• A Power Supply of 450 watts, or above, is highly recommended for system stability.
• ATX 12V power connection should be 20A or greater.

This is the recommendation for the "newer" K8N boards , not sure which model you have as there are 12 different boards now starting with K8N in their name .
In your spec it's best to use the MS-XXXX product version number in future posts .

Its slightly older its the MS7030-V1

Tried running barebones with

AGP/mem/cpu

PCI video

And connected the 4 pin and 20 pin power cables

Okay then .
From what I remember from a year back or so , there was several having problems with the boad not detecting certain ATI cards .
Involved olies like rage , 7000, and perhaps also 8500 .
Some could solve it by booting with other gfx card and bump up the agp voltage to 1.60v in bios , then change back.
If the board don't detect/get the AGP card activated post will halt .

Reason I think is the stupid MSI bios automaticly overclock gfx cards (hidden nv/ati speedup setting in bios) , so with a mainstreem , low end card you might just
end up with a non posting system like you do.
Thats also perhaps why upping agp voltage to 1.60v was a workaround.

Try with a old pci gfx card if you can preferably not from ati , or even a nvidia MX2/geforce2/GForce3 AGP4x and I'll bet it will post .

My last shot is a new cmos battery - is this a known fault with this earlier board? I have seen some problems with the Neo4 posted

What version is your 3000+ cpu ?
You might need a more resent bios loaded on your board if its the Rev.E 90nm based 754 3000+. The one called ADA3000BXBOX for socket 754 is 90nm revision E .

Cpu support from version 7030 bios 2.1.

I guess it's hard for you to know what version the board is loaded with.
But if you bought both cpu & mobo from the same retailer you could demand that they set it straight for you .

honestly everyone I think you are all great. The amount of help I have got with this has been great, espicially in such a short time. You were with me throughout the night so i was not alone with the problem.

Things are starting to happen now. I now get long beeps which loop, they just keep going (single long beep)

I have a single crucual 3200 DDR 400 - 1GB memory stick and have tried all slots.

I'll get you that CPU make when I strip off the HSF

Any suggestions now with the strange beeps - from what I have read its memory related, but could it be something else.

The pheonix bios has nothing stated for continuous long beeps, the award one does.

The bios chip on my mobo clearly states its a pheonix, so thats confusing :(

Try with some generic cheap pc2100/pc2700 ram 256/512MB if you have something to try with .

Theese things has also caused non post situations:
Disconnect all "case" fans that might be on the mobos additional fan headers , leave just cpu fan running from mobo.
Disconnect from mobos FPIO header all but the power switch and reset , disconnect pwr-led and hd-led connectors etc.
Disconnect pc-case front usb ports going to mobo header JUSB1/JUSB2 (and firewire if you have that).
