My GPU sometimes goes to Pstate P0 and stays there
« on: 30-September-17, 03:31:11 »

Hi everyone!

I have MSI Geforce GTX 970 Gaming 4G OC and usually when no 3D application is running my card automatically goes back to lower core/mem speed like it supposed to (higher Pstates) but sometimes it gets stuck in max core/mem speeds and then temperature rises, fan turns, and noise level rises and case temperature rises. I have checked if there are any 3D applications that might do it but it seems to be random and only restarting computer helps.

Is there any fix to this or is there any way to force the cards Pstates?

Thanks already! :]

Note that browsers and other applications can also utilize the gpu and cause load. Add S/N and a copy of the current vbios to check for an updated vbios.

Yeah i have checked the programs that use gpu with Nvidia's "GPU Activity" and with Kombustor and the apps that utilize are the norm things and gpu usually rests then. So nothing unusual on that front. At some random time the gpu just goes to Pstate0 and never comes back. I have tried to close everything that uses gpu but still no effect :\

Sorry, but i did not fully get what you meant by adding S/N (serial number?) and how/where/with what to copy current vbios to check for and updated one.

You are already using the latest vbios for your card (NV330MH.1Z1)

I meant that i had made so many questions where i could have found the answers myself plus sheer moment of stupidity :]

Okay thanks, good to know that!

Do you think of anything else that might remedy the situation?

Id do a virus scan for any Crypto-currency miners. I say this because you claim your temps are rising even when the card isn't being Taxed meaning something is using it in the background.

Yes, that is correct. I'd check that too.

Yes, but sometimes it does not pick up the latest automatically. It should at least remind you that your pc is ready for creators update.

Yeah i am struggling with disk space issues on C as a reason from not updating to the creators. I am thinking to install w10 from scratch when i get my new mobo/cpu/mem in near future.

No crypto miners since they the gpu utilization never rises up, only MHz of Core/Mem.

Now i have the Creators Update and the updates after that (Build 15063) and nothing is changed :\

Now i have gotten this "pstate lock" straight from boot which did not happen before and had to boot multiple times because of it.

Suggest to install Windows from scratch. It looks like there is any software causing it.

It was without the rift and i disabled it's services too.

Oh, nice. Thanks a lot for the progran tip! Going to try out now :]

And yeah my PC has been installed far too long, i am just waiting for new mobo/cpu/ram/ssd combo since they are within few months for fresh install.

Edit: Damn, it was not so good solution as i thought requiring restart and all that. All i needed was to keep it at lower MHz/Voltage while i did not do anything that stresses the gpu :\

Seems like this is an lost cause for me. I have tried almost everything, searched google and tried to ask for advice in multiple forums. I think the Windows re-install will finally do the trick (i hope so). Is there any chance that there is something wrong in the card? (i personally do not think so but just wanted to ask)
