Weird fan speed issue 480 8GB
« on: 21-August-17, 17:00:30 »

Hello,

Got an issue with my 480 8GB OC. I have been playing Rise of the Tomb raider, Dark Souls 3 and Subnautica and a past few days the fans will slowly ramp up all the way to 2400 RPM but the temps would be 34c. I use AMD Chill and for games that don't support it I use Frame Rate Target Control 60fps. I have been using this from the time they introduced it and never have I heard these fans when checked they are usually about 600 - 900 extremely silent. I was cleaning out my PC the other day and stood the GPU up and accidentally knocked it over. Fell on the same table it was sitting on but don't know if that has anything to do with it. I've got enough cooling 3 intake in the front and 1 in the back but even with 1 fan in the front before it never did anything like this.
Anyone else has this issue or think I should RMA it. I contacted support waiting for their reply.

It's currently idle at 45c, and for now i'm going to turn down the max RPM to 1400 for now incase it does it again.

I've be also got the lastest drivers installed.

Look at the fans when ramping up the speed and check if they appear to run at the same speed or one does not spin at all or appears to run a lot slower.

I checked the fans and they both are running and at the same speed. One didn't look slow, also I can hear coil whine. The fans don't seem to stop even though it's below 60. I just did a stress test and the fans are slowing down but very slowly. Its 34c and the fans are still going.

Fan control might be bad. Add S/N and a copy of the current vbios to see if an update would make a difference

Where do I find the Vbios firmware?

download GPU-Z from here: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-gpu-z/

load it up and next to where it says BIOS Version is a icon

click it and save VBIOS to a file (eg desktop)

once its saved there Zip it (forum doesn't like .ROM files so ziping gets around it) and upload it as a attachment to here

Thanks. I flashed to the new bios and reverted the fans back to automatic, and hopefully the problem is fixed. I'll come back and update.

Okay so it doesn't look like the problem is fixed. I just used a benchmark for 10 mins and the max temp is 62c with a fan speed 96%/2467 rpm. I have stopped the benchmark and the fans are still going nuts with temp of 28c. Before (this whole issue started) it used to stop when the temp was under 60c seems the flashing didn't help.

As of typing this the rpm is slowly going down. But nothing like it used to. The problem fixes it when I intervene changing the RPM from Automatic to 1522rpm then it completely fixes itself instead of continue to slow the fans. After changing the RPM manually, the fan speed dropped to 0rpm and temp of 33c.

I've attached GPUZ file. Sorry I log to file after I stopped the test but you can see the fan speed i'm talking about. Where the 0rpm is I changed the RPM manually. I'll do the log again but make sure to log before doing the benchmark, if requested.
