Title: B350 TOMAHAWK SLI Compatibility
Post by: herman.sauer on 04-April-17, 16:22:51
Good day guys,

Just want to know, I have an MSI B350 Tomahawk and I am not sure if it can run Nvidia cards in SLI. I know that it is definitely Crossfire ready, but nothing is said on the website about SLI.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Note that no B350 chipset board does support SLI as B350 can't share the 16 lanes 3.0 reserved for vgas between two slots. That would be required for an x8/x8 setup. Therefor the B350 Tomahawk can just offer the vga slot that is permanently at 16 PCI-E 3.0 lanes and a 2.0 slot with just 4 lanes. For SLI both slots for the vgas need to run at x8 minimum. Crossfire is allowed even at x4. Of course it would suck with 3.0 x16/2.0 x4 because the card in the 2.0 slot would be muach limited slowing down the primary card and causing massive micro stuttering. B350 is simply not meant for multi gpu setups. You will need an X370 chipset based board. The MSI X370 SLI Plus or Krait Gaming are not much more expensive than B350 Tomahawk and will support SLI if that is important for you.

Ohhh snap, okay thanks. I purchased the B350 thinking that it will support it as it had two PCIE ports. I did not know that there is problems like that which can bottle neck or even prevent it from working. so what you are basically saying, even crossfire is a very bad idea with this motherboard?

Do you maybe know of a benchmark where someone ran B350 with 2 x RX480s?
I want to see how much what you are saying will affect the performance of a crossfire setup

Benchmarks can't show that. The result is just average fps. That doesn't tell if game experience is smooth or not. If there are very high and very low frames in a game average result looks fine but it feels still laggy. 3.0 x16/2.0 x4 is a very bad idea. If you like you can try of course. Crossfire can still be enabled (that's all what Nichrome's link shows). Nvidia SLI disabled if not running x8/x8 at least is a rule with a reason for it.
