Title: Flash tool[1.09] for MSI UEFI BIOS [from UEFI Shell]
Post by: Svet on 12-April-18, 22:47:42
This tool will allow flashing your MSI's mainboard UEFI BIOS from UEFI Shell.

How to use:
Prepare an USB key and format it in FAT32
Download the tool from the link:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/pmhvvl3hj70fne7/V9_MSI_UEFI_Flash.rar/file
and extract all contents over the USB key,  [FAT32 formatted]
copy/extract the folder structure As Is to the USB key.
Do not omit the folders and sub-folders.
I.e: USB key root structure should looks:
then also add/copy/extract desire MSI UEFI BIOS that you want flash,
on USB key main/root (\) folder.
for example i want to flash a E7A34AMS.M90 BIOS,
and copied the BIOS file on USB key main/root folder/directory:

Next reboot computer,
and ensure in BIOS Setup:
UEFI Boot is allowed,
and Secure Boot disabled.

Then boot from USB key,
in UEFI Mode,
You can press F11 during BIOS post/logo screen, then when BBS popup after a while,
choose the prepared USB key with UEFI in front as name.
i.e: choose to boot from:
UEFI USB your drive

then wait, and you will see the BIOS version shown that is going to be flashed.
and you can press a key to proceed with flashing.
If you don't want to proceed with flashing,
you can press "q" to abort at that point.

when flashing starts,
wait patiently to finish,
ensure successfully message on the screen then reboot or power off the computer.

Note1: Be sure to place only one BIOS file on the USB key at the time, before proceed with flashing.
Note2: Due BIOS flashing nature,  (which consider every flashing as potential dangerous)
Flash and use at own risk as usual.
Note3: FYI: You can also flash your Ryzen X370/B350 boards back to an older BIOS using this tool

EDIT: A video how to use guide made by user efmled:
I wanted to Thank you Svet very much! You saved many nerves to lot of people! Tool is great! A very big thank you to Svet and whoever at MSI released this tool. Just used it to downgrade my B350 Tomahawk from 1G back 1.90 with zero problems.

Reason for the downgrade is for one game that really doesn't like something in World of Warships. You can see what the issue is here,

https://forum.worldofwarships.com/topic/155202-stuck-at-logon-screen/

Needless to say been dealing with this for close to a month now, and just tried the game after the downgrade and it is working just like it should. So once a again a very large thank you.

Now to post this thread there and hope this fixes it for the others in that thread, that all look to be running MSI AM4 motherboards as well.

Thanks so much, Svet.  This one worked like a charm...;)  Flashed back to 2.8 (see sig for board) and all is well--benchmarks now increasing when I move up the cpu clock...:D  If you can believe it, with the 2.A0 bios, the faster I moved up the cpu clock, the *lower* my cpu bench scores went!!!!  Have to say that in all my years of computing I have never seen that before...!  Not only that, but sometimes the 2.A0 bios would boot me at 2.8GHz...!...when the default clock is 3.2GHz, and I had set the boot for 3.8GHz...!  All of those problems disappeared when I restored the 2.8 bios--thanks for the instructions and the tool furnished in such a timely manner!  All is right with the universe, once again!

It would appear that bios version 2.A0 for my motherboard was borked by the AMD microcode Spectre 2 update, and that my first instincts were correct. After I had installed 2.A0 I ran InSpectre which verified that I had all the Spectre protections enabled, including the Microcode updates. So I turned off The OS Spectre 2 protections and rebooted to no change in performance or any of the other bugs, so I concluded that it wasn't the Spectre 2 mitigation--erroneously, it turns out. I had thought the microcode had been applied earlier--I was wrong. After successfully restoring the system to the very nice and stable 2.8 bios, I fired up Inspectre today--and guess what? Now it informs me that the microcode "fix" for Spectre 2 is missing (even though all of the OS stuff is there.)....! So to my mind--that's it. Mystery solv-ed, as Clouseau might say! For now, anyway, my advice is stay away, far away from the latest Ryzen UEFI bios versions! until a later version fixes it! So thoughtful of MSI not to include this information in the bios update info descriptions, eh? As well, so thoughtful of them not to make a ready escape out of it as they *had* to have known it was bad before they released it. Something this bad is so very obvious immediately--probably didn't test it--which beggars comprehension, frankly. They *knew* the code contained the Spectre 2 cpu microcode. Very sloppy and reckless, imo. I expect better from MSI!

I can confirm that this works for fixing audio issues in Battlefield 1.  The latest BIOS causes the game's audio to studder and the soundtracks in the menu will keep cycling to a new track.

Downgrade the BIOS to 1.9 fixes it.

"force flash" - mine told me it wasn't the same BIOS but I clicked "Y" as instructed and flashed anyways and or worked like a charm.
Thanks again to Svet for posting and rbleroy91 for pointing it out to me.

nah, it's public access even google login is not required to download it
if you can't download it, it's something in your end contact your ISP or local admin.

About video:
Not much to do, after extract the downloaded archive on FAT32 USB key,
just place the BIOS that you want to flash on USB key and boot from USB key to auto flash it.

Wanted to update this post--actually forgot I had made it.  Anyway, the 2.B0 bios update completely fixes all of these problems--no more having to Flash BIOS, thankfully!  Good job, MSI! I expected more, and I got more from MSI (hey, I know that is corny...;)  But it's true...!)

Guys  please don’t do this if you don’t know what the hell is going on like me ! I just bricked my B350 and sent it to guarantee.
P.S : I’ts written that after entering uefi usb boot there will be a number showing the bios version which is flashing but it didn’t happen to me and it was straight black screen for about 5 minutes then I just thought that I may have booted wrong drive I just restarted pc and my bios was gone ! And it wasn’t showing the post/bios screen .

if no flashing is done it can't be bricked because of this.

if you can't boot from USB key,
then something isn't OK with the USB key used,
i would suggest to use Rufus tool to format the USB key
then to try again.
or try with a different USB key

Just used this on my X399 Pro Carbon to downgrade to 7B09v17 from 7B09v1B.

It appears that this tool is definitely NOT compatible with Threadripper systems. Everything flashed successfully, but upon rebooting the system it does nothing at all. POST code readout stays at 00, it's not even trying.

Unless I get a chip programmer I'm good for RMA I assume?

EDIT: Against all odds, the USB Flash BIOS worked and was able to recover my system and successfully downgrade to v17. That feature had never worked once for me before, so I guess making your system unbootable makes it work ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Hurray, I can run my gaming VM again!

7B09v1B breaks virtualization and some USB devices, and they won't even let you downgrade with M-Flash. Come on MSI, this is ridiculous, people shouldn't need to use dangerous tools like this to restore their system to a usable state.

personally haven't tested it for Thread-ripper,
but for standard update it should works fine.

for situation where can't be flashed back to older BIOS by a regular way,
don't know if will still works fine for this platform.

did you use it exactly like in the guide?

its a different, those ami flashers are generic.
while those in topic here are very specified and customised per vendors needs.

Hi there :)

I'm intrigued to try this tool. I have a MSi z370 GAMING PLUS board.
I'd like to better understand the dangers of using this, and what could go wrong.
If I follow the instructions as written, place everything where it should be - at what point could I get notified that I should abort the procedure because something fails?

I hope my question is clear, and would love to learn more.

Cheers

Hello danholandi,
Why are you interested by this tool? Your mobo has M-Flash and it is very secure if you follow the recommended steps.
This tool is used as last resort when normal bios update cannot be done. Fore example, AMD (not MSI) refuse downgrade since AGESA Code 1.0.0.6 so M-Flash cannot downgrade; this tool makes the job. As Intel user, your are not concerned.
Have a good day,
:hat tip:

What allocation size do you suggest I select when formatting my drive to Fat32 or does it matter?

NVM. Got it figured out.

Edit:

Well... I've managed to flash back to 7A32v1H from 7A32v1J (x370 gaming pro carbon)

Set everything exactly as it was before & no longer experiencing lockups, crashes, or any other issues.

That flash tool is absolute GOLD.

Thank you so much for the great walkthrough. :hat tip:

make sure to boot from USB key's UEFI,
not from build-in UEFI-Shell from BIOS

It looked exactly like in your first post in this topic . Efi and my bios file in the root of usb. I created bootable pendrive with liveupdate software it downloaded something like ms-7996.exe and it created flash usb. Do you think your tool is better than liveupdate they both use aefudos or something. If you think your tool is better than USB created with liveupdate software i wilk reflash using your methods sińce last time i had trouble booting front USB on my MSI h110m-pro d

This tool saved me a lot of hassle.

I upgraded my gaming b450m from bios 14 to 16 and lost sound in windows and linux.

Bios 16 doesn't allow downgrading bios.

I tried Flash BIOS Button with 5 usb keys to no avail.

Thank you guys from this utility!

I am using a B450 Gaming Pro AC with 7B85v14 and i decided to update to 7B85v16 since its the latest BIOS and it has a big difference in size (over 200Kb so i guess it changed a lot). From the very first moment i updated i had various issues such as, CPU Fan on boot took long to start, if i left the PC on Idle (without Sleeping) the PC would cease to work (would have power but no signal on monitor).

Huge problems and no way to downgrade via M-Flash. I did everything the guide said and it worked ! I'm back to 7B85v14 which works flawlessy and it has Offset too !

I recommend this tool, thanks OP.

Thanks so much.

I haved updated BIOS of Bazooka b450m on 7A38vH3 to 7A38vH6, and as result it broken all audio connections of the GPU rx-580 (No HDMI audio), but curiosly, IGPU RYZEN 2400g (HDMI audio) work well. No matters what driver or configuration I be tried. Then I found this post whit the solution. After looking everyting on google. Nothing works, only this post had the solution.

Now I'm back on BIOS version 7A38vH3 and everyting is fixed. I am very grateful.

A word of warning to all....

DO NOT flash the AM4 BIOS update for 3rd gen Ryzen CPUs or later using this tool. I was on 7B07v3E on A320M Pro-VH Plus and I used to do every BIOS update using this tool (since I trusted it more than M-flash) since Summit Ridge updates, never gone wrong but this time when I updated to 7B07v3G1(Beta version for Ryzen 3000 support) this tool showed a successful flash but my PC wouldn't POST at all.

Now I know Athlon support has been removed from the updated BIOS but I was on Summit Ridge (Ryzen 3 1200) and I'm planning to upgrade to Ryzen 3rd gen soon.

In any case, this post saved my PC's life...
https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/techfaqdetail.aspx?formid=3046 (https://service.msicomputer.com/msi_user/support/techfaqdetail.aspx?formid=3046)

Credit where credit is due. Thanks! I reflashed the same latest 7B07v3G1(Beta version) using this method and it worked and POSTed successfully.

So if someone wants to try to flash the latest update using this tool, please don't and save the hassle and a possible BIOS brick.

I don't have such board to perform this test to check for this issue.
Maybe you can try again (assume if recovery if needs is not the issue)
to see if can be duplicated or it was some kind of accident.

Made an account just to post this. This tool was a life saver for me when I ran into the issues others have run into in this thread. B450M GAMING PLUS with a Ryzen 2200g and RX 570. I had worked with another B450M Gaming board I recently purchased to build a computer for a family member, it came with bios v60 and I didn't have any apparent problems because this build only used a 2200g with no GPU, hdmi audio worked fine. So I figured updating the bios in my old build would be safe. One bios update later and I no longer have any audio output from my RX 570. I reinstalled drivers, rolled back my computer with system restore, searched endlessly on Google for solutions with no luck. Then finally stumbled across this thread and another thread with the exact same issue I had. I rolled back my bios to v40 and audio was back. I also went ahead and downgraded the new board I received that came preloaded with bios v60 to v40 since I didn't want to leave my family member with a computer that may experience issues in the future due to unstable bios.

So thank you for creating this tool that allows for bios downgrade since it is not possible to downgrade via official methods currently. And to anyone who reads this, avoid the latest B450M bios like the plague until Ryzen 3000 series cpus come out and MSI puts out a stable bios for use with them.

it should
if he flashed to 3xx compatible BIOS, some of older CPUs are no longer supported by this new BIOS

I am updated BIOS: 7C02v17 - 7C02v19 last week. I'm confused
I am Revent to BIOS 7C02v17 or 7C02v15 this tool?(Which tool: Flash tool 1.09 or 1.06)
which usb connection? Usb 2.0 or 3.0 connections?

its up to you to which bios you want to re-flash
if you flashing back, best reflash to your prevision 1.7
(if you haven't used 1.5 before, so you don't know how it will works, will your CPU will be supported there and so on,
to avoid unwanted surprises, stick to BIOS that worked fine for you)

(Which tool: Flash tool 1.09 or 1.06)

always use the one from the 1st post
(in the 1st post there is always only one version at the time)

which usb connection? Usb 2.0 or 3.0 connections?

wont matter, but generally USB 2.0 ports are more stable and reliable

yes it should able to recover with flashback in a case of accident

yes, the warranty will be fine,
if a accident happens would be just a bad flash which can't affect the warranty
