Title: x399 Meg Creation hangs on warm reboot a fraction of the time.
Post by: jawknee530 on 15-April-19, 21:40:48
Hello everyone,

I have built 8 machines as workstations for an office.
Specs:
Threadripper 2990WX
MSI Meg x399 Creation
Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB
G.Skill TridentZ RGB F4-3000C16Q-32GTZR 32GB
2 X PNY Quadro P1000
EVGA SuperNOVA 1000 P2 PSU
Windows 10 Pro 1807
Bios 7B92v12

I have IOMMU and SMT disabled on all boards (was getting BSODs periodically before this due to watchdog timer error before this change), also have memory running at 2133 16-18-18-38 (was at xmp but lowered because of this issue)

These machines run 24 hours a day 6 days a week. They are restarted once a day at 5pm. Three of the eight boxes will periodically (once out of maybe four or five times) hang on a reboot. When this happens the lights are on, fans are spinning, but no output anywhere. The only way to get the box back up is to pull it from power and start it up cold. Additionally all 8 machines will require two attempts to boot up from starting cold. The initial press of the power button lights flash then go down, and the second press everything spins up as expected.

Hi,

What error code did you get when one of the systems hangs on a warm reboot?

What BIOS versions boards are using?
And do you have any OC applied?
Can you also check events log for the exact BSOD error?
0x133 perhaps?
Is it the same BSOD code everytime or changes?

No OCs applied to any workstations. The current (main) issue is not the BSOD, but the hanging on a warm reboot. The BSOD is indeed a watchdog violation when it was occuring though and I'd be happy to have a solution for that other than disable SMT which has worked for us so far. The locking up on a reboot happened again to a third box this morning. Bios for all boards are v12.

Not yet, planning on doing some upgrades this weekend when they're not actively in use. Are there any other ideas on what could be causing it?

Hi,

You could probably try to tighten or loosen the TR4 screws pillars or the CUP cooler on the socket a little bit, if the problem still persists after a BIOS update.
Does this issue occur only on the same workstations (3 out of 8)?

LBJistherealchamp, the real champ of what?  If you are running an AMD RAID, I recommend you install the latest drivers (9.2.0.00105).  Enjoy, John.

EDIT: Sorry, relied to the wrong person.  Should have asked jawknee530 if there is a RAID.

Yes the issue is on the same subset of boxes. One is the worst offender and this happens 1/3 times I'd say. The other two are maybe once or twice a week. There are no raids set up on any of the boxes. Each one has only a single 1TB Samsung 970 Evo or Evo Plus.

Hello,
1/ For those who reboot badly, have you installed Windows directly on them or on another pc then moved the OS disk? It is a common problem of this type of "installation".
2/ If yes, can you take a spare disk and try to do a fresh install directly on the pc as test?
Have a good day,
