NEC 2510 DVDRW - problems found in Hi-Fi mode.
Stops playing Audio-CD after 30-45 second from beginning of track.
mp3 disks randomly stopped with Nodisk message on LCD display and no way to eject/restart disk without switching to pc mode.

MEGA 180 and NEC 2500A works.

I can't say I'm a good source though because I'm not using MC3, and I dont use HiFi mode at all (PC is always on). So I haven't confirmed alk's problems, but will try it out and postback.  It won't eject from remote(minor), fine otherwise.

    Hi Everyone,

I am about to buy a MEGA 865 Deluxe. Does any know if MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer will fit in nicely and work properly. I read many issues about not ejecting in different modes and others.

Appreciate if owners of MEGA 865 with MSI DR8-A can comment on it's pros and cons. Thank you.

It would be great thing to receive authorized compatibility list from MSI representative and publish it here.
I'm sure the Hi-Fi mode is more buggy than PC one. So please take it into account during your replies.

    Hi everyone,

I am just about to put this box together, please advice..

Heard any compatibility issue on this one? IE, ejecting problems or loosing functionality in PC or HIFI mode?

    MEGA 865 Deluxe with MSI DR8-A 8x8 DVD±R/±RW Writer

It will be a bummer if I out this together and it doesnt work properly. That will be money down the tube.

    Thanx.

  • you'll find that most optical drives will work, msi just recommend their own so you'll buy one of theirs!!

i think it's just the length you need to check, some of the older longer drives probably won't fit, most new drives are the shorter type

I've received some interesting URL from MSI, it i s a kind of what we are talking about:

AVL from MSI Mega 865 page

I can add to this list several optical drives tested by me:
    Sony CRX-225E, CRX-230E CDRW
I am going to purchase Sony CRX-320E combo drive (DVD-CDRW) which reported to be OK in hi-fi mode. After testing I hope to add it here.

    I tried Sony CRX-320 - works in hi-fi.
No problems with playback except occasional short sound interruptions during audio-CD playing. Not so frequent to be annoying.

Atachly i have that MSI drive on my main PC and it hads a few bug, sometimes it doesnt read a disk first time and you have to eject it then put it in again. I have the DR8-A2 which is 8x +/-. Instead you could get the DR12-A (12x+R 8x-R) thats just out, or wait for the DR12-A2 (12x+r/rw Duel Layer too) whcich will be out soon.

Nice compatability page there... they are all MSI Products.  You sure that isn't just a product listing page?   :-))

I am running a Plextor 708A - 8X DVD Burner and the only problem I have had is using the eject button to close the DVD tray.  If the tray is open, and I press the button to close it, the tray closes, but then opens right back up.  In order to close the tray, I have to actually push the tray in.  It's more of an annoyance than a problem.

The other thing I have noticed is that the DVD will spin up extremely fast, like it's going to break the sound barrier fast, if I open up Windoze Explorer after working on the computer for a half hour or so without having browsed/explored the file system. :fear:

like ALK I got the same problems in HIFI mode: playing 1,5 track and then nothing (see other thread started by me) And nothing works except plugging line voltage out!
    I use a B&Q DVD +RW burner.
MSI should be able to give a comptability list? Why should we invent ourselves at high prices what works and what don't??? o_0
Otherwise they should not leave you any choice in what drive you should mount.
I still have no reply to my questions to MSI on this subject.............

I have the Plextor 708a.  It will only open again if you use the eject button to close the CD Tray.  If you push the tray in, instead of using the eject button, then it will close like a charm, without repoening.  :-]]]

I have the 865 and the Plextor PX-712A.

The drive ejects the CD out again, I have to enter it "twice" in order to keep it in the drive...

The biggest problem is.. it ejects ok (with the front button), but it will not go back in again!! It gets stuck in the front panel...
    :bonk:
The only way is to hold the front panel down with one finger, and at the same time button/push it back in..

Odds are good that you don't have your DVD Player mounted correctly in your Mega case.  You will need to push it back a bit in the box.  I had the exact same problem with my drive, but after playing around with it, moving it forward/backwards, I was able to get it mounted properly so it would close without gettting stuck.

Possible, but doubful.  Most DVD/CD Players conform to the same size specs.  They have to if they want to fit into all of the cases on the market.  Odds are this problem is due to drive being too far forward.    Other folks have encountered the same problem and successfully resolved it.

i'm using a samsung TS-H552B 16x Double Layer DVD R/RW and have had nothing but problems. Problems opening and closing the drive, sometimes not establishing there is a drive there. If the drive is showing it may be shown as a DVD-Rw or a CD-Rw. Anybody reccomend a drive that is compatible with my system?

Geez I wish I read this thread a couple of days ago. I just bought the Samsung drive, and it rarely reads a CD, hit the eject button and it'll open and close like a loon. Stear well clear

Luckily the place I bought it from has a 7 day return policy, but now I'm out $20 as a restocking fee  :angryfire:

Think I'll go for the NEC 3500A as they stock it and from what those here have said it works well  :rolleyes_anim:

Please don't assume DR-8A, DR8-A2, DR-12A will work correctly.  We had problems with the DR-12A on the Mega 865, it would playa  few tracks then it would say no disc, even if the disc was ejected and re inserted it still would not work without powering off and on again.  We tried several drives DR-8A2 and other and had similar problems.  We then tried DR-8P (an actual MSI manufactured drive!) and it worked flawlessly.

    Just FYI

    Hi fans !
I just get my new Mega865 pc from our local dealer as complete/intalled pc already, all functioning well, also with XP SP2. Only problem is that,
cd/mp3 not work in hi-fi mode. Radio is ok, if i set mp3 mode, display only
shows "searching" , also eject button not funtioning in hi-fi . I opened front Mega  outer drive cover and tryd also orginal drive open/eject button, but this one also not funct., seems like no power for drive in hi-fi mode ?? Did the dealer forget connect something inside Mega or my optical drive NEC3500 not works not at all in hi-fi mode ?? In pc mode everything works, also with Home Theater.
Does anyone have same problem ? thanks in advance for advising ...

    Hi
    Mega 651
Fitted a NEC -3500A DVD R/RW 16X and had a nightmare with it. I have build hundreds of PC's up and have not had this much trouble with all the others combined. It wouldn't play at all in Hi Fi mode. It would crash the system all the time, not eject the tray other times.
I swapped it for a MSI D16 (MS-8216) and it works great!
The drive keeps cool and is around a inch shorter. Only down side it isn't a burner like the other.
