32GB TeamGroup PC4-25600 Doesn't Boot on z170a Gaming M5

Hello all,

Last week I purchased a 2 x 16gb Kit of TeamGroup PC4-25600 (3200MHz) ram (part number TED432G3200C22DC01). When I installed it into slots 2 and 4 in my Z170A Gaming M5 motherboard, it powered on but simply did not boot. The motherboard gave a code of 55 which I believe the manual stated was that memory wasn't found.

When I removed that memory and used a 4GB stick out of a spare Dell machine I have, the Z170A boots up like a champ. I also noticed in the BIOS, XMP is disabled for that 4GB stick.

Is my kit of 2 x 16GB simply not compatible, if so why? I do notice that alot of compatible memory here on the MSI page is no longer sold new on Amazon so I'm forced to go for a cost effective alternative of the same speed/brand. Thus I ended up with this TeamGroup kit which isn't booting at all. I assume I'll have to return this memory?

Can someone enlighten me on what I'm missing here as to why this memory isn't allowing the system to boot??

Try each ram stick one at a time as one may be faulty.
Also make sure you do a clear Cmos.

I forgot to mention the working 4GB memory stick is a Samsung S0GAA2093633D6A140 and the only other hardware is an i7-7700k CPU.

@Alan J T I have done that (testing the memory sticks one at a time) and what I got was the 4GB worked on slots 3 & 4. When using the 4GB stick on slots 1 & 2, I get no boot with a motherboard code 55.

When I boot the 16GB sticks individually, they give code 69 on slots 3 & 4 respectively, while giving code 55 when running them together.

I wasn't sure what I'm missing here.

check your CPU Sockets pins as i bet that you have some bent pins in the LGA Socket.

@badboy2k When a friend gave the board to me, it did have some bent pins. I straightened them out and got the board to fully boot. But would that explain why these memory sticks won't work even in slot 4 when my Dell's 4GB of ram works in slot 4 just fine?

First of all you need to fix the 1st and 2nd slots (bent socket pins).
After that you can try with a single 16GB module in slot 2.
The last step is both memory modules in slots 2 & 4.

Memory Types : DDR4-2133/2400, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V
So for start, be sure XMP is disabled.
You can try faster than 2133MHz when everything is working properly.

@RemusM I'll definitely be checking out for any additional bent pins this evening when I get home. When I boot the PC with the 4GB stick in slot 4, XMP is listed as disabled in the BIOS. Does XMP get enabled by default for sticks that support it, or does it manually have to be enabled?

I did notice that about the CPU specs after ordering the memory. Does DDR4 perform like DDR3 and lower memory, that higher speeds clock themselves down to lower supported speeds for compatibility?

Again, fix the 1st and the 2nd memory slots first of all.
When you have a single memory module, use slot 2.
When you have 2 memory modules, use slots 2 & 4.
Anything different is not correct!
Now talking about Core i7 7700K and 3200MHz memory:
with 2x4GB is doable with many CPU samples, but with 2x16GB ... very slim chances!
So be prepared for 2133MHz ... 2666MHz (if you fix the slots).

Make sure XMP/DOCP is disabled BEFORE you switch in the new ram. Not doing so is never a good time!

Well after working with the board more gently this evening to try and fix the pins, one broke and now the board doesn't boot and gives a code of E0 so I figure it's toast. The Gaming M5 seems like a nice board so I've found a couple others online for a reasonable price that I'll see about picking up this week.

Thanks for the info on the 32GB at 2133Mhz, I'm totally fine with that maxing out at that speed if that's all the higher it was able to go. Considering this is replacing a first gen i7, that memory speed is far surpassing what I've had before.

I got my replacement Z170a M5 in yesterday. BIOS is up to date, i7-7700k boots perfectly, BIOS reset to defaults. Here's the kicker. The 2666MHz 4GB stick I had from another PC, still boots the PC just fine. I insert those 2 x 16GB TeamGroup 3200Mhz ram sticks (in slots 2 and 4) and it doesn't boot. But if I still the 4GB stick in slot 1 with the other 2 x 16GB sticks, it boots to Memtest 5.31b AND tests just fine.

What gives with it not booting? If I don't have to return the memory, I won't, but I'm wondering if I get 2 x 16GB say 2666MHz sticks and insert those along with the 2 3200MHz sticks and live with it that way?
