3D Game Speed Problem

This is my first post to the Forum - hopefully I am not making an error in posting to an incorrect site. If so, my apologies in advance - and I would appreciate any comments as to where my question would be better posted.

I am in the early stages of putting together a new computer - primarily for use as a online/offline first-person shooter gaming machine (SOF 2, Quake Arena, Unreal Tournament, etc.)

The system I am putting together consists of:

MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU Motherboard
AMD XP 2100+ CPU
512MB + 256MB PC2700 DDR
Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM Altra ATA/133 HD
XTASY Geforce4 Ti 4600
Philips 24x12x40 CD-RW

I installed Windows 98 SE, Norton SystemWorks 2002, and some other utility-type software. Up to this point, everything seemed to be working fine. Then, I tried installing Soldier of Fortune II. The installation went fine - but, when I started up the game, the computer seemed to bog down and all of the screen activity appeared to be moving in extremely slow motion. I have almost no control over the mouse cursor.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what area I should start looking at first to remedy this problem - BIOS updates, chipset driver updates, etc.? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and thanks for the same in advance.

kfs,

First suggestion is to get Norton and any other utility progams off your computer. If they are active, they can slow down the game. If you have a Virus Crusher running, turn it off to until you isolate the problem.

Take Care,

Richard

P.S. Norton causes many more problems than it fixes. I have done many service calls that I fixed the comp just by removing Norton.

Did you install the VIA 4in1, DirectX8.0 or above and detonator 28.32 or above (preferablt in this order) ?

The VIA 4in1 in particular can have a drastic effect on preformance.

P.S
I am using Norton system works 2001 myself on a very similar system without any problems.

Thanks much for both of the replies to my original post of 07/23/02.

After reading your feedback, I tried some things like removing and disabling my utility software, upgrading my VIA 4in1 drivers, upgrading the NVIDA video drivers, and re-installing DirectX 8.1. However, there was very little, if any, noticeable improvement.

Finally, I just gave up and re-formatted the hard drive. Then, I re-installed Windows 98SE and then installed the original VIA 4in1 drivers and the NVIDA video drivers from the MSI Drivers & Utilities CD. After that, I installed DirectX 8.1. Then, I installed Quake III Arena - and everything worked great. The problem is solved - for now, anyway.

However, I'll be careful to re-test the performance every single time that I upgrade a driver or install additional software from this point on!

Thanks again for the replies and suggestions - they were helpful.

:]
