Hi,

About 3 weeks ago I upgraded from a 3070 to a 5070. Everything was fine then a few days later I was getting stuck on a black screen after the MSI mobo logo. Put the 3070 back in and it booted to desktop no issue. So I re-installed drivers using DDU and still no luck. Sometimes it would boot fine other times it wouldnt. Finally I rechecked all my cables, made sure 2 individual ones went to the card and reseated the card. Worked fine got to play over the weekend no issues until it happened again this morning. Seems like now its getting stuck on the mobo logo screen.

I'm not sure what I'm missing, I've tried single monitors, going from DP cable to hdmi only, and sometimes it boots then randomly doesn't. I bought this brand new and I am past the Best Buy return window, which is unfortunate because I would've just returned it if possible and dealt with the 3070. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apologies Svet, see below. If you need more information, let me know.

Board: MSI X670E MAG Tomahawk Wifi
BIOS: 7E12v1K7(Beta version)
VGA: MSI RTX 5070 12G Gaming Trio OC
PSU: MSI MAG A850GL 850 Watt 80 Plus Gold
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
MEM: 2x16GB G.Skill Flare X5 Series DDR5-6000
COOLER: Corsair iCUE H150i Elite
Keyboard: Logitech G915
Mouse: Logitech G305
OC: None
OS: Windows 11
Display: Gigabyte G27Q/Dell Monitor/Arzopa Portable Monitor
- How display is connected to the GPU?: Was DP until recent 5070 problems, now all HDMI

Do you have any OC applied on the system?
Can you test the GPU in another PC?
Have you tried to >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed?

P.S: Moved topic to correct area.

No OC on the system. Initially I just installed the 5070 then updated drivers. When I first had issues I went back to the 3070 and did the DDU method.

I have no other PC to try it on. I did the clear CMOS method just now. I was able to get the message saying it was cleared and booted to the desktop. Thank you for that information! What're the proper steps to go from here to make sure nothing conflicts?

Well check if the problem will persist after Clearing the CMOS.

What does board EZ debug led shows when it's stuck in there?
Also do you see the OS start loading prior this black screen?

It's unclear to me yet if the stuck is at BIOS level(bios posting) or when OS starting loading.

And what which Win11 version you are running? 25H2? Build?
Which GPU drivers you are using and which vBIOS the GPU is using?

Finally I rechecked all my cables, made sure 2 individual ones went to the card and reseated the card.

Tell more details about this.
How the GPU you currently powered?
Which 2 cables did you mean goes to the GPU?

Best use the single 600W cable from the PSU to the GPU that comes with your PSU:
(PCI-E 5.0 (16 pin) 1 (600W))

EZ Board debug would not show anything after the black screen. Normally it's the MAG logo and the loading circle beneath it. The spinning will hang up then goes into a black screen. I have had it happen before where the spinning circle hangs up and after 20 min it remains hung up. But 90 percent of the time it was after this logo.

Win 11 Home
Version: 10.0.26200 Build 26200

GPU Driver Version: 32.0.15.9186
Nvidia App Version is saying 591.86

I apologize but I am not sure what is mean by vBIOS the GPU is using.

For the cable question, my 3070 just needed a single PCIe cable to it. This card came with a split cable. The instructions mentioned to run 2 individual PCIe cables from the PSU to the splitter which then went into the graphics card. I have attached some snippets. Currently still boots fine to desktop with the single monitor. I will try to plug all my monitors in again and see what happens after more use.

Oki, then it's your Windows that hangs at load, not the BIOS post process.

Check it from GPU-Z, at [Advanced] tab,
then from the scroll bar on the top, select [NVIDIA BIOS]
then do a screenshot.

Don't use the split cable that come with the GPU,
it's alternative option if your PSU don't have/don't support 600W direct cable.
Since your PSU native support PCI-E 5.0 (16 pin),
use this one instead the split cable.

Currently still boots fine to desktop with the single monitor. I will try to plug all my monitors in again and see what happens after more use.

Check it when it's connected to each one monitor alone.
If that pass: Then check a different possible combinations of ports and cables.

Got it, you have the latest version installed.
Ok so this is where I'm at, seems like it might be narrowing it down. I have the 3 monitors. One is my main Gigabyte 27 inch 144Hz, second is a Dell 60 Hz, third is a 16 inch or so portable monitor. I tried every possible combination after trying each one on its own and they booted to the desktop fine. Once I did all 3, again they booted fine, but my Gigabyte was defaulted back to 60Hz. I changed it to 144Hz and did a shutdown then turned it back on.

This is when it hung up a bit at the MAG logo longer than the previous times, I then got the black screens and my Dell showing no signal going into standby mode. Stayed on the black screens for about 5 min and realized nothing was going to happen. Shut it down by holding the power button.

Unplugged the Gigabyte and left the other 2 plugged in. Booted to desktop fine. I plugged the Gigabyte in and it came on all normal. Changed it to 60Hz and shut it down. Turned it back on and it booted to desktop fine at 60Hz.

Is this different than the NVIDIA app used to download drivers?

Yes, that's FW updater.

Used the FW updater, once I restarted it like it mentioned to take affect, the same thing happened. What I ended up doing, could be coincidence so we will see, is disable and uninstalled wallpaper engine. Once I did this and my monitor stayed at 144, I shutdown and turned on the PC, booted to desktop fine. I'll see how the next few days go. Thank you Svet and Alan!

Have you changed the GPU's power cables too?
I have not. I checked the original box I have for the PSU and the cable is shown on the box but I only have a spare SATA cable. Checked the PSU and the port for it is not being utilized for something else. No clue where it could have gone. I got it from Microcenter a couple years back. I'll need to purchase a new cable.

Oki, also check for firmware update for your monitors.
And / or try a different and high quality cables between GPU and monitors.

I got new DP 2.1 cables and have been using those. I re-did DDU this morning, restarted it after driver install, boot up was fine, shutdown on 144Hz and black screens. Only way to get the main monitor to work now is just keeping it unplugged and letting it boot with the other 2 then plugging the 144Hz one in. I created a ticket with MSI, I'm out of the return window for Best Buy, hoping MSI has a better policy and going to just send this back if possible. It hasn't been worth the headache and shouldn't be jumping through hoops to get it to work with an MSI mother board. Appreciate everyone's help but I think we have exhausted our tool box.
