A proposed motherboard design moves memory to the rear of the PCB, using CAMM2/SMT technology to eliminate high-frequency signal stubs and achieve zero-length interconnects [AORUS CAMM2 Motherboard Leaks - TechPowerUp]. Well, there are many ways that motherboard design could be improved. The current design is largely based on gradual evolution of utilitarian designs from many decades ago, with much lower cooling demands at the time. Even the ATX PSU design with the three voltage rails of 12V/5V/3.3V stems from those old days, and for a while, they pushed a new "ATX12VO" (12V only) design which would improve efficiency by putting some circuitry on the motherboard instead of in the PSU, with board prototypes, new PSUs and everything. But even that rather modest change didn't really catch on.

If a motherboard design were to be completely reimagined from a current perspective and with current cooling and signal integrity demands in mind, it would probably also necessitate a different case and PSU design standard. It won't work if only one manufacturer attempts it, it would have to be a coordinated, industry-wide effort.

However, at the moment, certain parts of the hardware industry are busy making record profits from selling hardware to AI data centers, which buy up almost everything at almost any price. There has rarely been a worse time to build PCs for home use. So I doubt that any company is willing to invest big into radical redesigns of PC technology right now, the money is to be made elsewhere at the minute.
