Hello,

I am not anywhere near to be hardware expert so I need some more clarification.

My MSI notebook model is GS75 Stealth 8SF. If I understand correctly, my MSI model has one samsung SSD (SATA?) drive originally.

And if I understand correctly, I have two M.2 slots left or something like that?

If I choose between these, which ones are supported?

1. WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD 2TB Internal SSD (Gaming Memory, PCIe Gen4 Technology, Read 7300MB/s, Write 6600MB/s) Black
https://amzn.eu/d/3Ymzkyc

2. WD_BLACK SN770 NVMe SSD 2 TB (High-Performance, Gaming, PCIe Gen4, M.2 2280, Read 5150 MB/s, Write 4,850 MB/s) Black https://amzn.eu/d/fY0q0gA

3. Samsung 980 PRO 2 TB PCIe 4.0 (up to 7,000 MB/s) NVMe M.2 (2280) Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (MZ-V8P2T0BW)

If not, what do you recommend?

Thank you in advance,

You will not get those speeds as your Laptop only supports up to gen 3 speeds.
1x M.2 SSD slot (SATA), 2x M.2 SSD Combo slot (NVMe PCIe Gen3 / SATA)
Basically, you'd be wasting your money on a Gen 4 SSD.

Hey mate, thanks for the swift reply

I am looking at gen3 now but it seems the price for 2TB (Crucial and Sandisk) is almost the same as gen4, in case of WD_BLACK SN770 it actually is the same (€129.90).

So if I buy gen4 it will still work, except the file transfer (read/write) will be slower than this SSD supports? (I can still use it on a newer laptop eventually)

PCIe is completely downwards and upwards compatible, so all that happens with a high-end PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD like an SN850X is that it will not be working at its full potential when it comes to the bandwidth. It will still do a bit better than a lot of PCIe 3.0 x4 SSDs, simply because the controller and firmware are fast and well-optimized, which gives it an advantage in IOPS etc., even if the maximum bandwidth is capped to PCIe 3.0 speeds. Added benefit, it will also stay cooler that way, because the controller doesn't have to work at its maximum.

Then later when you use it in a more modern laptop with PCIe 4.0 x4 interface, it can run even faster, but it will also run hotter, so it has to have decent cooling. The WDSN850X is known to run a little hot at full load. The 980 PRO a bit less so, but still. The SN770 is the coolest-running in that regard.

Hey,

thank you so much for explanation!

Now I know what to buy :)
