AGP 1x on G4MX460

Just bought a G4MX460 but it works just in agp 1x; if I try anything higher, system hangs.
System:
PIII, 1Ghz socket: 370
ASUS CUV4x, Via 82C694X, agp 4x, 256SDRAM, Windows XP Home.

Besides it, I can?t use mipmaping feature in games. I play Flight Simulator 2002 Pro, the reflections on the aircrafts and scnery are gone. Maybe it works only in 2x or 4x agp mode.
I also tried every possible nvidia, msi driver, 4-1 Via also.

This is the second card I am trying so far. The first one (like this one - G4MX460) had the same trouble. I thought it was a card?s problem. Then changed to an equal one but problem remains.

I need and appreciate any help.

When the Apollo Pro 133A Chipset was first used by ASUS there was a problem with the GART. It could be the problem here. Have you updated the BIOS on the mobo yet?

I have EXACTLY the same prob and my machine specs are almost the same. I have a PIII 1G/256Mb Ram, MSI GF4 MX460-VTP, Abit VH6 (VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset). I have tried the latest BIOS for my board. I have tried XP Pro and 98 with 30.30 drivers, I got it to go OK on 98 but i'd rather XP.

Thanks for the attention. I?ve already installed the latest bios but didnt work out. Have contacted ASUS, but waiting for an answer yet. I really don?t know why this happens. I tried to use a Creative Geforce 256 in AGP4x mode and, for my surprise, it worked. All the way in games with multi texturing support, and all the stuff. Now, is the problem caused by the mb or MSI?s card?

I second that. Who do we complain to? The MoBo manufacturers for a new BIOS or the MSI for drivers? I assume tho that MSI only mod existing nVidia Detonator drivers so the best you are going to get is 29.42 (the latest official release) Maybe a new BIOS for the Vid card? I assume this is also only going to be based on the nVidia reference card BIOS. I am going to see if i can get some support out of Abit but being that they are based in Taiwan i think i will be lucky if i even get a reply.

You will find that the MSI 27.20 drivers will work (well they did for me) but performance is WAY down compared to newer drivers. The interesting thing here is that it mentions a the download to use these ones for the VIA KT133 and a couple of other VIA chipsets. There must be issues with this chipset as well.

also, if you have the MSI drivers with Detonators, it causes probs. For me it was easier to reload the OS to get rid of MSI drivers but you can just uninstall Dets No probs.

seguinte... nao sei que tipo de treta que vc tem, nunca vi igual... mas, aproveitando que vc tem a mesma placa que eu, me diga... vc consegue usar sua saida SVIDEO para uma TV ???

Eu nao consigo... somente com cabos RCA... vc tem ideia do que possa estar acontecendo ??? Nao sei se eh problemas de configura?ão no win XP ou se minha TV esta com viadagem... ela tem uma entrada SVIDEO e 3 A/V analogicos... e para rodar Svideo devo habilitar na TV primeiro ! Se souber de algo me escreva em lumac@globo.com

Success! Well to a level anyway. I DISABLED AGP 4x in the BIOS and to my amazement my PC ran fine! Apart from the fact that it ran slow (no 4X accelleration) it did not freeze. Maybe this is an option to get it running unlill a propper fix is found but i'm not sure. I am thinking of just taking the card back anyway. Maybe get an ATI based card. I shouldn't have to go through all this CRAP to get it to work. I am yet to hear a reply from MSI or Abit in regards to the issues i am having....

After reading more in to this i came up with:

there are two versions of the Apollo Pro 133 chipset, one has an A on the end (denoting AGP 4X) This is what i have. BUT, apparently OS's have trouble determining the difference between the two and get confused. Also, If nVidia drivers detect either chipset then they DISABLE 4X, according to apps you are still running at 4X but in fact you are not! So, I assume that the apps are trying to do stuff in 4X mode or something and getting confused. Setting it to 2X makes every1 happy (except me cos it runs crap!) ?(

Hey guys, just thanxs for all the help!!

I really got a thought nowadays: I spent a lot, and I mean a lot, of money judt to wonder 40 FPS more in games, or 7000 or more in 3dMark. But after thinking, I know how to get that: pull the sliders back and waste my money with some more interesting, like parks, movies, girls, and so much more. Die for a VGA card, that brought me no happiness sounds so stupid now that it don?t work. Besides, if it worked, maybe I would get borred with it anyway an remind the money I wasted on it.
I contacted ASUS, they told me to get it back to AGP 2x, and using the 27.20 detonator from MSI made my card work in AGP 4x. But I bought it for performance!!!!!!!!!!! Why would I take if half way down??? If I can?t use it, I just won?t anymore. I tought on buying a new MB but, it would seem the same. I am done of wasting so much money with this technology, we finish like slaves for it, even if we don?t need it (my case).
Next time, I?ll use my cash more wisely, maybe helping those without a home, a family nor food. When I see this people and think back on the R$ 550,00 that I wasted, I get real mad. But I got the lesson. I hope you all do also.

Entao... comprei no STAND CENTER... fica na Av. Paulista... paguei 472 pilas na placa em 2x sem juros.

E... consegui fazer funcionar SVIDEO... foi foda... fucei muito... mas consegui... agora preciso saber como fazer para deixar a TV em FULL SCREEN... nao tenho ideia...

verifique no manual. Ha uma parte que diz como fazer a placa funcionar em TV, algo relacionado ao Nview (software que acompanha a placa) que eh desabilitado de fabrica, vc so precisa habilitar.
Eu comprei minha placa na Sta. Ifigenia.

I found the solution!!!!
FINALLY!!! I worked out what has been causing this problem!!!

Ok, Go into your BIOS and look under "Advanced Chipset Features" go to "AGP Driving Control" and set to 'Manual'

Now, you need to play with this one 'AGP Driving Value'

In short, this is the 'Signal strength' to the AGP card. For me (abit VH6 ) the value that i got to work was 'CC'

The Value is in Hex format I am told that Tyan also recomend this setting, however, i have seen CA,DA,EA, FF etc, I would start with CC tho. I found about 5 values in total that worked (out of 255). Be careful with this setting tho cos you can nuke your card etc. You might get worse lockups or major artifacts (like huge overclocking).

Abit have still not come up with this solution but i have hinted to them that this might solve the problem.

For me, this has worked 100%, NOT ONE LOKCUP SINCE THE CHANGE!!!!
