AMD 64 slower at windows applications then a p4

For some reason my 1.3 ghz p4 system boots up and runs windows applications faster then my amd 64 3200. The only thing the amd runs faster are game applications . Is this because the cpu is made for a 64bit os? I have the msi k8tneo updated to the latest 1.33 bios. Ram is 1 gig of corsiar pc3200 and set the ram according to the corsair website. It kind of pisses me off after spending 400 bucs for a cpu and 200 on a motherboard that my 3 year old p4 runs faster. Would i be better off with a 3.2 ghz p4?

How exactly do you mean that? Like.. slower at actually opening a window/running basic programs. Or running programs that take a little more computer power.

If I were you, I would run Spybot or Ad-aware to rule out spyware.. it can seriously slow you down.

There has to be something else going on, because I know for a fact that the A64 will beat that 1.3 p4 in anything.. except lower 3dmark scores. :)

i just changed from a 1.5ghz p4 and i notice exactally opposite of what you have. my programs open faster, games are running faster, everything IS faster. there's definately something wrong with it. i'd say bench mark your system and make sure it's up to par with other 64's out there. if the cpu is testing fine, it could be your hd's or anything else.

SiSandra would be a good place to start.

I'll confirm what denkin posted: my new Athlon64 3000+ system is running fast and smooth (except for the Audigy soundcard problem, which the onboard sound solved for the meantime).

You could be dealing with virus/hardware conflict/config issues...hope you can solve it.

To add to this:

I have 2 systems.

System1: P4 3.0Ghz 800FSB / 1gb Ram
System2: AMD64 3400+ / 1gb Ram

All components except motherboard and processor are exact in these systems.
I find that my 2 systems handle software differently. My P4 runs some software faster and smoother than the AMD64 system but on the other hand my AMD64 systems rockets past my P4 system. Go figure!

Looks like it's having Ram or Harddisk troubles.....as it's way faster!!!! :-D)

Windows has a nasty habbit of trying to run even when there are troubles....but then running slow...

there's no way a P4 is snappier in Windows then an AMD64 unless something is not setup right or at minimal performance.. Just came from a P4 3GHz myself and one of the things I did notice was more "smoothness" on the AMD platform.
Also I'd like to state that I find the AMD platform more problem free then the Intel one, don't get it why the OEMs still prefer Intel because of stability, had 3 P4 CPUs before going for an Athlon CPU and they all gave me lots of problems.

What the hell am i doing wrong?
I updated to the 1.33 bios hoping it would resolve my issue. All the Bios update did was fix the auto reboot at shutdown.Figuring it might be a memory issue so I tried kingston, crusial and finally this corsair memory that i set according to the corsiar website. I get pretty much the same results no matter what memmory i used. Like i stated before The AMD does blow away the p4 when it comes to game applications. The amd 3dmark benchmark puts the p4 to shame.
But as for regular window bootup, applications and internet access it just seems to take twice as long . This is a fresh windows xp home install and i even ran adware to remove any spyware that might be roaming around.

Hmm.

What specs did you actually set your corsair ram. I too have corsair ram and am wondering if that is the problem. Please list what you did.

CAS LATENCY -2
TRCD -3
TRP -3
TRAS-6
DIMM VOLTAGE 2.7 VOLTS
Tried placing memmory at dimms 1~3 and 1~2 . Makes no difference where the memmory is placed.
