Audio Crackle

I have just got the K8 mobo with the AMD 3200 64bit proc.
This is the second system I have(the first would not boot!)
I have a Mark of the Unicorn sound card ( 24 i/o ) and This card cost 3x the mobo packet so i am alittle bit disapointed that i cant get it to work without crackles and pops (like the breakfast cerial!). i have read other people with the same problems with the audigy cards.
It seems to me that this mobo is not made for audio!!!!! Is there any fixes for this problem or do i have to reinstall my old mother board and processor and wait for this system to get the bugs squashed.MSI must have tryed this board and I dont belive they did not encounter any problems with it............so why release it in this state.Waiting afew months to rectifie the faults...... :frankie:

Why don't you use the on-board soundcard? Im using it because my audigy card did not work with the K8 mobo and so far the sound have been working without problems. You won't die tryin' so give it a shot.

I am a PRO audio user so I need the sound card i own as it has 24 audio in /out connections.I have a recording studio so the onboard sound card doesnt quite cut it!! :wall:

in pnp /pci section of the bios you have a setting pci latency timer

it works in multiples of 32 so try a higher valueif its at 32 now or evan 64

this allows the card to hog the bus longer

I will try to up the PCI latency settings in the bios. I have tried all the PCI slots and they all do the same.All that i have installed is XP and the sound card.So i dont understand if there are conflicts.Also when i start up media player with this set up it freezes then restarts.
Bit confussed about this. i even tryed 1 memory sim(512mb). When I put my old motherboard in (ASUS A7V8X Barton 2500) it works straight away with no problems.

you will still find there is a difference in irq sharing between the slots,so find one were the card gets its own irq

The PCi card has it's own IRQ (17) I have changed the latency up to 224 but still i get the crackles.Media player is still crashing also.I dont get it. I just tried my old board + proc and it work first time no problem.XP was installed with the new boarded. I really dont know what to do?? :wall: :confused2:

Well it isnt the power as i just got a new 1 (ac 480w true ATX pfc bluelight) and the bloody thing is still doing the same. i have never had so many problems with a mother board and processor.
I have done a new install of XP pro and installed all the drivers from the CD. Yet this board is still playing stupid games. If i look at all the other people having problems with this board i wonder why(and how!) they can put this on the market.I hope they resolve ALL of these issues soon.

OK.SO I have tried to use the onboard soundcard and I cant even get the computer to see it !!!!!
What is going on?!?! I have installed only the Videocard so why the onboard soundcard isnt working I dont know.This is a fresh XP istallation.I then installed the videocard and then the rest of the drivers for the card.Please help :confused:

I've forgotten what the terminology is, but you can lower the spikes of each clock cycle which usually addresses audio crackle.... in the bios menu for power settings, clock frequency settings etc, there is a setting with a +/- % tolerance... choose disabled as an option, or goof around with the percentage.... usually that helps with audio crackle.... unfortunately, I can't see what it would have to do with any software crashes.....

Has anyone resolved this problem? I've got the excact same problem, with same equipment (except for 24i/o I have 2408mk3, but I assume it's the same card, PCI-424).

I don't know about my power, it's Antecs Piano Black Sonata case and power came with that.

Anyone, please say there is a solution?

As you can see Raymond had problems, and I had the exact same problems as Raymond. I use a 2408mk3 and a 1224 on a PCI-424. I spent two weeks trying to get it to work. After seeing you two with similar problems, I'm fairly convinced it's either the K8T's design or the VIA southbridge. Before more folks start insisting you try a new power supply, I was using an Enermax EG651P. It's not RAM as I tried two different sets, and never did I have problems with anything other than the PCI-424. I even tried pulling all other PCI cards and disabling every possible onboard device.

My resolution was to go with a Gigabyte K8N Pro, the board currently recommended by the guy that runs www.liquiddaw.com. The 424 has performed flawlessly in initial tests. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to put down MSI or the K8T, especially not on MSI's own forum. Other than the 424 problem, I love the board's features and wish I could have stuck with it. Unfortunately, I had to decide enough was enough. The PCI-424 is a HUGE improvement over the PCI-324, but like many pro audio cards it can be particular at times.

BTW, the onboard audio won't work with another audio controller installed...period.

Yep, after struggling with different mobos and memories for 2-3 weeks, I'm not gonna put the gloves down on MSI after 2 days. I'm not gonna spend more time troubleshooting something which seems to be a clear incompatibility case. The same power and PCI-424 worked flawlessly with GA-K8NNXP which I had earlier. Only I couldn't find working memory combo for this mobo and switched it for MSI, which seems to have been a false move. I should've kept looking for working memory for K8NNXP. I'm gonna try and return MSI and get back the old K8NNXP, which I hope will eat the same memory as K8N Pro. I also hope to get memory recommendation from either you or Scott :).

Anyway, what I've got experience, a pro soundcard either works with a mobo, or it doesn't. I'm "engineer enough" to go thru the basic troubleshoots of crackle in a few hours. If those troubleshoots don't work, it just won't work. I've noticed this many times.

Alan, thanks for your participation on this one, it's helped a great deal.. let's continue this over at the Sonar forum tho, as it's easier to focus on one forum :).

Btw, even the onboard soundchip turning off is good enough reason to switch the mobo. I've always used an extra soundblaster/on-board-chip for everyday windows/internet sounds.

i don't have a sound card. i use VIA's onboard audio, but during Battlefield 1942 when I get in a tank, I start to hear a crackle. anyone else know what that is?? I do not use PCI slots, I use only my one AGP slot for my 9700 Pro.

I remember when I had an Asus board and used nForce2, it took a later release from nvidia to get sound crackles resolved. This is a newer chipset that I have now and I was a tiny bit surprised to hear some crackles.

ideas?

some sound card problems are solved by changing the pci latency ... a lesser know solution espcially with crackles is to enable spread spectrum in the bios if its not already enabled .. again its one those things that works for some and doesnt for others .. but no harm checking and trying
