Audio randomly jumps between normal volume and low volume

I own a GS66 Stealth and apart from the speakers being rather bad, it doesn't stop there. The speakers will randomly and very often suddenly switch to low volume, but not in the volume settings. Let's say you're at 80% volume, then suddenly it can make it sound like you're running at 30% volume but you're still at 80% officially. Then you crank it up to 100% to compensate and all of a sudden it reverts and you're blasted with way too loud speakers instead. It keeps doing this very often, especially when watching a movie. It gets extremely frustrating.

As recent as today I did a full wipe of speaker drivers and speaker software (realtek and nahimic) and did a fresh install but the issue is still present. I have tried using speakers without nahimic but doesn't fix it either.

Anyone experienced this as well?

Finally I gave up, I contacted MSI and decided to send it to them for estimation if there is a hardware problem and if it is under warranty.
They found the fault and fixed it. Got it back now for couple of week and seems to be ok.
The following parts were replaced: THERMAL MODULE, SPEAKERS.

They found the fault and fixed it. Got it back now for couple of week and seems to be ok.
The following parts were replaced: THERMAL MODULE, SPEAKERS.

I was wrong thinking it was driver issue...

I bought MSI GS66 Stealth in May this year (2021) and have the same problem described above. I don't think it is accident, and I'm sure there are more people with this issues.
This is new (2021) laptop with RTX 30, there must be something wrong they just missed. I don't wish to pay for repair. I paid enough for new machine which is only 1 month live.
In my case the volume changes by itself, one time down, another time up, underestimated in relation to the system volume. For example, a volume of 34% once heard as less than 10% once as if 60%. Sometimes 100% sounds like 30%. The left speaker is crackling sometimes. It is hard to describe and predict. But it's very annoying. When headphones are on it's ok.
In my opinion, it is not physical damage to the speakers or the computer, it must be something other like the driver or incompatibility with the system.
I went thru the websites exploring similar cases not only with MSI, I have tried some solutions ( one was similar like above ), nothing helped. I'm giving up. I had GT72 before, I was 100% satisfied, unfortunately due to video card and screen fault, no point to fix it, I have chosen MSI again blind with a belief of its value I'm bit disappointed now. Hope it's going to be solved without involving customers pockets.
Please let me know if there is any solution of it.

So...has anyone had issues with v2.82 yet? I'll try that procedure if others who have tried it have had success with it. Very frustrated - I gave MSI the link to this thread and told them it probably was a driver issue before sending it in for BOTH RMAs (at their insistence)...and the issue still persists. Many times I can't even hear movies, and/or I need to double the volume of the left speaker to balance the audio.
I've been having this issue for over a year, mostly with the left speaker, with a GE66 RTX, I just tried the Realtek v2.82 and now my volume is louder than ever before. I went to device manager, uninstalled the driver, made sure the attempt to uninstall box was checked. Next I disabled windows from auto updating drivers, installed v2.82, restarted, went to device manager to confirm windows didn't update the driver, it didn't, and now I have nice loud audio. I also don't have Nahimic Installed, but it's driver is still installed.

Version 2.82 ALWAYS works on my GE66 w. RTX3070. Yes the sound is louder, but that's not an issue at all. I have occasionally tried updates, but keep reverting to v2.82 since it just works...

for my GP76 11UG rtx 3070 notebook the problem seems to be driver related.
I use nahimic to crank up volume with 12dB and equalizer all to maximum to be able to use my high impedance headphones.
The volume gets low when the system fails to use the nahimic drivers and the intel smart sound technology oed doesn't start.
Sometimes a restart is enough but sometimes I have to use device manager to reinstall Intel smart sound technology oed in system devices area that failed to start the driver. Then the nahimic is being used again and the volume is sufficiently loud again.

That driver does not seem to exist on a GE66 (Intel Smart Sound Technology)

I don't understand why you guys are saying 2.82 works. It doesn't on my GE66. I just did it myself and even followed the advice to disable auto update of drivers. Starts off loud on a restart and then is quickly dampened as usual and won't go back.

I actually had it fixed since an earlier post. But for the second time now, I've fixed the problem only to have Nahimic update and break the computer again, with all prior solutions no longer working. This is like the opposite of an update. Like they're purposely just breaking people's computers every time a solution to this problem is found.

The sound on this computer is absolute trash any time I can't have it connected to an external sound source. My phone is louder and clearer by far. Ridiculous. What a stupid and simple thing to get so horribly wrong on a gaming laptop. I'm definitely going somewhere other than MSI for my next gaming computer.

Still there's 3 possible cases:
1. Hardware problem
2. Software problem
3. None of the two above
I think everyone tries two figure out which of 1. or 2. It is. With 1. of course the manufacturer can help. With 2. We do our best to discuss here.

The preinstalled drivers on my GP76 factory configuration contained a initially present misconfiguration.
With the help of the DriverStoreExplorerer v0.11.79 I was able to wipe out more than 512 faulty driver entries. After intensive work with this tool now the problem of the unreliably starting nahimic and intel smart sound drivers is gone. Currently using smartsound 10.29.0.7767, nahimic 4.9.4.0 and realtek 6.0.9297.1.
Unfortunatly it's not possible to backup this new working state, as the MSI recovery tool just backups the buggy factory configuaration. Even with a 64gb usb stick the the MSI recovery tool does not work stating that a minimum space of 52gb is required. It's not possible to overcome that error message. Only solution is to use Windows' backup tool (win 7). Then the backup size is about the size of the recovery tool backup of 18gb roughly.

I'm confused how you'd know which 512 driver entries were faulty and could be deleted. Is it an automatic process and is there some chance I'd just completely zonk my machine by deleting the wrong entries? Is this trustworthy software? Seems to have been made by an independent party rather than a known company.

First you have the deletion option for old drivers.
Then it can search for duplicate drivers.
Third part of the answers is, that I (in my case) saw an extremely big number of drivers in the tool of seemingly same type (webcams and other not so vital stuff) which seemed to have been copied there from a lower level directory onto a machine that obviously doesn't need to support such big numbers of drivers of same type. A specific notebook model mostly hasn't got more than let's say 5 (more likely less) different webcams, keyboards, wifi+modules or so. At first I was stunned by the sheer overwhelming number of drivers I saw in the tool. Then I looked what of this didn't make sense. And the deletion process took some time even though it's possible to select multiple drivers simultaneously for deletion.
Of course it's better to be cautious, but I worked several years in IT business, so I knew that deleting the system and architecture drivers are not the first thing todo. Even though I dont know which drivers should not be touched at all, as I didn't try or read about it.
If you're unsure it's better to ask somebody with experience (I don't mean me, more the supporters of driverstoreexplorer).
I think it's a good, reliable tool.

I disabled auto hardware driver updates in Windows, and downloaded the latest driver directly from RealTek's website instead of using the one provided by MSI to solve the problem for me. I even have louder audio than using the 2.82 driver.

This was an earlier suggestion that has not worked for me and some others. I just want to make very clear for people that this is still a problem after years, and MSI does not care. They're about to release a new line of laptops, and this is the level of quality you can expect. Go with another brand.

If you're genuinly affected, you should get in good contact to MSI Support, imho.

I have. It was RMAd for this earlier when still under warranty. Didn't fix. Now it's out of warranty so if I contact them they'll just say it's outside of warranty.

The two Ls in "they'LL" makes me think you didn't really try.
Is my assumption correct ?

Yes you can safely assume that English works the same when I speak it as with anyone else. Wasn't trying to imply otherwise. You talk like an MSI rep trying to dishinestly have the last word on a thread that is otherwise going to dissuade buyers. I'll go ahead and contact tech support, then come back and let you know they said exactly what I said they'll say. Assuming they even let me submit a ticket for an out of warranty product. I've been through this countless times with companies. Don't fix a problem under warranty...claim to be trying until warranty expires...then switch to saying can't help because warranty is expired. Rinse and repeat.

MSI would be badly advised to not try to support their products to a working solution.
In case of doubt please tell them I can supply a copy of their factory backup which in they can take a look at the driver catalog with the more than 500 displaced senseless drivers.

BTW: my only connection to MSI is that I have bought a notebook from their company. The hardware still works very good and I was able to solve the driver problem myself.

I hope they can help - I guess you tried the driver cleanup I proposed before and did not succeed with that in your case.

I just sent the following to them. We'll see how they respond:

"Hi, back when this computer was under warranty I began reporting a problem to MIS with the internal speakers which will not remain at full volume. The sound is fine with external speakers plugged in. It only happens with the internal speakers. I have tried every reasonable solution I could find. Sometimes a solution will work, and then my Nahimic software receives an update and the sound breaks again. I have spent about 16 hour working on this problem and I don't know what else to do. The computer has been RMA'd, formatted...I've tried forums...nothing provides a permanent fix. It seems software related and others are having the same issue in the forums. Is there something I or MSI can do?"

No, I did not try the driver cleanup. I find the software itself suspect, and further would be too worried about uninstalling something I shouldn't. I've also spent over 16 hours on this problem, and that solution seems incredibly laborious, and just as likely as anything else to eventually break again. At this point I think I've done my fair part to try to resolve this problem, unless there's a relatively easy fix like a new driver update.
