I want to share my TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE experience as a MSI owner. I bought an MSI GL75 9SD 3 years ago. On January 20, 2023, I put my laptop in service in Belgium, with the famous problem at MSI - the monitor hinge broken.
Ok... I understood and I accepted to be repaired. Apart from the fact that it lasted more than a month( arrived on February 24) I was informed that it is not possible to replace the hinge but the entire monitor case must be replaced and the total cost 197 Euro.. .. Ok, although it seems very expensive to me... I accepted...

Sorry, but why would you give a device with such important data on it away for repair without having a single backup of it? There is a saying: No backup - no pity.

This should be a major learning opportunity to make backups. If it's for work, and you can't work without the data, then you might even need several backups, just in case.

Because I had a huge amount of data... I saved what I had very important... but still... I DIDN'T PUT THE LAPTOP FOR REPAIRS ON HARDWARE, ANY REPLACEMENT OR STUFF... IT WAS... I REPEAT... ONLY A HINDGE BROKEN... WHAT IS THE CONNECTION BETWEEN REPAIRING A HINDGE ON THE MONITOR AND THE DATA ON THE LAPTOP???

You don't put your car into service for repairs on windshield and when it came back there is no engine inside!

Was it the exact same laptop or did they give you a different one?

Honestly, to answer your question I had to check the serial number on the back. Because this laptop has been used most of the time in 3 years as a desktop... I have another one at work. So it looks almost new also because I use an external keyboard and mouse.
So, yes, it's my laptop, they didn't give me another one... Or at least according to the case.

I mean.....from my own experiences....they even state that you should save all your data and ensure you don't have anything you need on the computer when sending it back.....At least in all the documentation I've ever received, it ALWAYS states that. If you didn't save the data, then I really think there's only 1 person to blame....

That being said, I also understand your frustration. Why would they have to reinstall windows/wipe the drive when the problem wasn't really related to the software on it, etc.... I get how frustrating that must be. But ultimately, they probably wanted to test and verify that everything was working OK which probably required all the software to be reinstalled. We don't know what their procedures are, so we can only guess, but ultimately.....I think it still falls on the user if they didn't follow what the recommendations were to save any and all data.

I went to Apple store few months ago as my work macbook pro screen suddenly stopped working. Even though it was just the screen (or rather just no backlight), they still told me to take a backup and asked to sign a doc that I took backup. I don't take work laptop backups as it'a all a code in repositories, but to an extent I see where they could be going with this.
Possibly unnecessary wipe, but they could have some procedures. Might as well be that they wipe it on the entrance before ANY diagnosis regardless of the issue so no random employees does any digging into the files one way or another. Unfortunately can't help it, but this may be a lesson for you. Courier might have lost your laptop too, and data would be gone regardless.

most Manufacturers do that now with any Repair. had a bad screen on a samsung Phone that needed to go to them for repair (it developed lots of lines across the display) and it came back fully reset to Factory Default and all my apps and files gone as they had reinstalled the OS on it but i had backed it all up onto a flash Drive and just set it all back up on it.
