first of all, you really shouldn't use Ryzen 5000 series CPU on B350 chipset motherboard. It wasn't designed base on the new CPU so most likely the board will not "fully" support it. However, it seems MSI is releasing AGESA 1.2.07 BIOS in May. but imo, don't expect your board gets the "most urgent" support :bonk:

What plutomate means is you wont get the necessary performance advantage the CPU can offer due to the Limitation of you motherboard

I am moving from 1700 to 5900x, on my tomahawk b350. I already purchased the 5900x and new fan, waiting for bios update to AGESA 1.2.07

I may not see the very best performance improvement, but for $400 to move from 1700 (9% rank) to 5900x (90%+ rank) is a no brainer, even if the 5900x runs slower than its potential. Also, I won't have to deal with transferring my windows license, which is a nightmare if it doesn't go smoothly.

the B350 tomahawk is still a solid board

Wasn't making it clear but Alan J T explained it :beerchug:
i suppose when you say ryzen 5000, you're not referring to the top tier CPU in the list. Basically any B550 chipset board should do the job,
130 USD for B550-A PRO, unless you're going for 5900x, 5950x, in that case, you wanna go MPG/MEG segment board

B550 Mortar works a treat and is one board recommended by reviews for gaming I have the High score in Australian with 3Dmark for a AMD board running a 3900x and 6800 gpu on the B550 Mortar and I now have the 5900X and am in top 30 worldwide without doing any OC setting yet on the CPU in Time Spy Extreme. Board can easily handle the 200 watts the CPU can draw.

I'm having trouble understanding why you two are defending MSI. its the same AM4 socket, and AMD has finally allowed B350s to run Zen3. If MSI doesn't release a BIOS update, I'm 100% certain I will not buy MSI in the future. This makes sense to me...

This has nothing to do with MSI, and more to do with limitations imposed by AMD.
Like it or not, Intel changes sockets for a fairly good reason.....as time goes on, hardware improves. It's hard to have a product that is literally 5+ years old, and have it support the latest hardware to the fullest.
AMD has proven that their theory for the socket is good for certain respects, but poor in others. Incorporate that with their generally poor support (There's a reason you see so many BIOS updates for any given Zen platform......), and it makes the platform a poor choice for anyone that wants stability (IMHO).
What you're getting with running a 5000 series chip on your B350 is more of a hack than anything else. AMD is simply doing this to appease people like you, that refuse to update to a new board but still want a newer CPU. Will it work? Honestly, it might, or it might not.

That being said, the reason others are suggesting a new motherboard is to get that full support. Even now, a $130 on a newer motherboard is a generally good investment, given the newer range of ports, and more ability to connect NVMe's, etc.....all of which are better supported in these newer 5000 series chips. And considering the newer board is built specifically for the 5000 series chips, there's less worry about issues, power regulation, etc.....

But yes, you're welcome to switch to another vendor, but I'm fairly certain they will be of the same mindset, and for good reason. It just makes sense.

you'd make a terrible realtor - "Sure this apartment fits your budget and needs, but you should get a mansion in the hills instead. Its much nicer!"

Its entirely up to MSI whether they put priority in supporting their existing customer base.

for my needs, $400 and 15 minutes of time could mean going from 1700 to 5900x. I don't OC but i do use multi-threaded apps.

I'm not trying to be a realtor. I'm trying to be realistic. Realtors will tell you anything to make that sale. Much akin to lawyers.

And it's not ENTIRELY up to MSI whether they put priority in supporting their older customer base. You completely assume that what MSI gets handed by AMD 'just works' (hint : it almost never does quite right....). But it's easy to forget simple things like that (which, if you go back to my post, I even make mention of.....for good reason. There's a 3 (or 5 depending on how you look at it and if you know) generations worth of history there already......

But yes, compare apples to oranges. I'm sure people will agree to that. :bonk:

Prices will vary quite a bit depending on location. Having said that....

The MSI B550 Tomahawk is basically the middle of the road board. It's not the absolute best, but it's not the worst.
The MSI B550 Gaming Plus is also right there with it.
Lastly, the MSI B550-A Pro is basically the bottom end of the spectrum for the B550 series.

The biggest difference is the Tomahawk has all the same as the other 2, except it also has 5+ optical SPDIF audio output, 2.5G and 1G lan ports (dual lan), but it also has 2 LESS USB 2.0 ports on the back panel.

Basically, if you don't need the 5+ optical SPDIF audio, dual lan, then either the Gaming Plus or the -A Pro will work fine for you needs.

I live in the USA, and the B550-A Pro is $140, while the MSI B550 Tomahawk is $170. Just to give some price reference here.

Pcie 4 you mean
More the 200+ watt Power Draw the 5900X can hit I have not even started to push mine in OC testing yet and am hitting 195 Watts I believe AMD have a hard maximum limit of 220 Watts so the 5900X is already close to that out of the box with no tweaking to boost all Core performance. I am not sure if your board can actually supply that amount of power to the CPU. So you may end up Power limiting the CPU,

Now as to the second concern Memory the 5900X works best with Memory of 3200 to 3600 and Memory support higher than 3200 is very limited or non existent.
