B350 Tomahawk and SSDs not being detected sometimes...

Hi all.

Aside from the usual BIOS related issues already posted in droves here, there and everywhere, here's another odd ball for folks to check out....

Specs:

Mobo: B350 Tomahawk w/1.0 default BIOS
RAM: 2600 Team Group 16GB (2 x 8gb sticks) in slots 2 and 4
GPU: XFX RX 480 8GB
PSU: EVGA 650w
CPU: Ryzen 1700 (all set to default/auto settings)
Storage: Samsung 480 series Enterprise SSD (512GB), an OCZ 256 and another Samsung 128 older SSD
OS: Win 10, all drivers up to date, etc.

Right now, I have only the 512GB SSD hooked up, as earlier, at times with all three drives (plenty of power to go around, things plugged in correctly, etc.) I sometimes got it to boot to Windows, but many times I'd see just a blinking white cursor on the left of the screen.  I did attempt to force the boot order to the 512 SSD first, but to no avail in that config.

Sometimes however, when rebooting or powering up from a cold boot, the 512GB SSD isn't detected (not during POST nor in the BIOS).  This has happened maybe 3 times now.  All connections seem ok and the cable is fairly new so it shouldn't be an issue, plus I did swap the cables around once before when having the other boot issue above.

Not sure if this is something drive level (physically it checks out, and per all the diag tools ran on it, it is perfectly healthy). I suspect it's either a BIOS issue (likely) or a cable issue (though unlikely).  I am going to try using one of the ones that came with the mobo tomorrow to see if it makes a difference, but would love to hear if anyone else has seen something like this before.

Are there any other devices attached? USB? PCIe? How about disable all the other boot devices and leave the 512 SSD only (not just put it on first)? Also check BBS Hard Disk subdirectory.

Angled as in the ones pointing to the front of the case?
That's actually where I have mine, it's in port 0.

I have the exact same issue with a samsung ssd 850 evo...i need clear cmos and shutdown computer, quit energy cable and push 30 sec powerbutton to cleand Msi b350 Tomahawk energies, then i push f11 and i can find my hdd.

Hello,

Same problem. I started the system on BIOS version from February and all drives were detected. Then, I updated it and I cannot see the drivers anymore.

Here's the configuration :

1 x western black 4tb
1 x western black 2tb
1 x corsair force LE 960 gig
1 x samsung 850 evo 500 gig
MSI B350 TOMAHAWK
2 x  Hyper-x 8gig
Asus R9-290X Direct-cu
Ryzen 1700 (No-oc)

I can see the HDD but not the SSDS. This is annoying. I put like 3 hours this morning on that when received the motherboard. I dont want to dismantle everything to put my old motherboard to work.

Pleassssseee MSI, fix the bios !

Ok guys what the main problem on SSD drives is the cable you are using. I have many cables and the ones I have that do the best job are the one without the clip on the them. I have many times have had the same problem on many computers. You think that the clip type is connected but some times it isn't. 

I build 20 to 30 computers a year. Plus I did have the same problem on this board. Change to a cable I knew that it work with the SSD from another computer and all my problems went away.

Ive been able to make something work. Simply swap the hdd and ssd.....and it worked. Tried 2-3 times and 2 port on 4 are not working with my ssds....WEIRD.

Well, the cables I have are I believe known good, and were working before. But for the hell of it, I ordered up 4 x more SATA III cables for myself.
Plus they are red and should match my color scheme better :p

I did re-seat the SATA cable on the primary HDD and haven't seen issues since *knock on wood*

Hopefully after swapping there won't be any further issues.

Cables don't arrive until  later today, but saw in the 1.15 beta bios release notes that there was a cold boot sata device loss fix.

Updating my SSD saga.

So, it's not the cables. Replaced them all with brand new working ones. They do work, but based on what I'm seeing/experiencing and what that 1.15 beta bios stated about the cold boot issues detecting SSDs....yeah.

Gonna need that bios update.  New cables didn't hurt, and I also tossed my two new red LED fans in the top of the case to vent out, so hey, win win for me :)

Clear CMOS? Properly according to the instructions?
Did you set your BIOS to defaults prior to flashing the new BIOS?
Have you tried setting your BIOS to defaults, saving, and rebooting?

I wanted to add my experience with this mobo and SSD...I have an Intel M.2 SSD that the mobo does not detect frequently when booting.  Usually, if I shut off all power (pull the plug) and wait a few minutes, then restart, it will detect it.  Sometimes I have to go into BIOS and reset the SSD as my primary boot device.  It is very aggravating.  I don't think it is a SATA issue, but rather the mobo's ability to detect SSDs.  This happened with the BIOS version that was on the board when I got it a few weeks ago and with the Sept. 19, 2017 update.

Glad it isn't just me... ive called MSI and they know nothing of the issue... both my HDDs detect and i can change the boot order on them ...but not my SSDs.. yet they show up when i fingerbang F11 and i can select my boot drive. and boot into windows that way just fine... this is unacceptable.. everything worked just fine before i updated to 1.9 except if i go backwards i have RAM detection issues and instability. :/
