B550 and B550I Systems slower with 1.2.0.7 Bios and 5800X3D CPU

Hello All,

Today i updated my B550 Gaming Edge Wifi and my Brother his B550i Gaming board to the new 1.2.0.7 Agesa bios. We are both running a 5800X3D.
I notice my 3DMark CPU Scores are quite a bit lower with the new bios. The CPU does not seem to boost as high as before. Now 4450MHz istead of 4550.|
All core clocks also seem lower:

Here you can see the compare between the 1.2.07 and 1.2.0.6.c Bios. The 1.2.07 is even running a higher BCLK to try and compensate (the old bios would not boot that high tho).

But as you can see the performance is quite a bit lower due to the lower boost clocks so im switching back again. The BCLK OC version is just as fast as 1.2.0.6c stock.


I would also like to See a option to undervolt the CPU. And be able to set lower Power and Temperature targets in the BIOS.
I know AMD locked overclocking because higher voltages and temperatures can damage the Cache.

But why not add undervolting like ASUS did.
i would also like to lower the PPT from 142 to 125-130 watt. And lower the max temp from 90c to like 80-85.
PBO -CO should also be available. I again understand that +CO is dangerous but lower voltages are better for the lifespan same goes for lower power targets and temperatures. So why not add those?
 
Undervolting had always been considered of part of "overclocking" same as "underclock" the CPU frequency.
I do come across PBO2 tuner software from overclock.net
maybe you can give it a try? for example, set -30 for all core and see if CPU performance is improved in any way

I know it's considered "overclocking" but unlike overvolting a undervolt cannot damage the cpu. It can only make your system unstable.

The reason amd did not want to allow "overclocking was that higher voltages and temperatures van damage the cpu where non X3D can handle more than stock.

Thats why I don't like the fact that they don't allow underclocking then at least wek can tweak a bit.

Hydra 1.1E does work for -Co but just like this 1.2.0.7 bios it locks the max boost for single core tot 4450MHz somehow. Other cores do show higher clocks one gets stuck. But you clearly see lower single thread scores when applying the -CO. Multi core on the other hand sees a increase.

Might be something the bios does since its officially not allowed.

Yeah probably. I think they know a lot of people do not like the fact that all tuning options are gone.
Robert Hallock also said they might enable overclocking for future X3D products if the technology is mature enough.

But i still have some hopes that undervolting might be a option in the future.

I tested the PBO2 Tuner. It gives me the same result as Hydra1.1E. Core0 T0 will not clock as high anymore but the others will boost higher. All core performance is better single thread performance is lower because of it.

Might be a Zen3X3D thing then. i noticed it in two systems now.
CB R20 is also quite a bit slower and gaming performance also seems so have taken the hit. So i will be switching back to the 1.2.0.6c because 3-4% lower performance with a bios update is a no go for me.
 
I did some additional Testing:

This is with both biosses stock. And the same memory speeds.
The 1206C is quite a bit faster. And it also has better memory overclocking. at 3750MHz the 1207 bios is already getting WHEA problems.

It also does not scale well above 102bclk the scores stay similar.
The result on the left with 1206c is after the flashback. So i will be staying on that bios for now way better performance and stability.

Couldn't MSI set a maximum allowable voltage if a 5800x3d is detected? That way everyone except the overclockers are happy. Starting to wish I had just purchased a 5800x instead...

Keep asking and it may just happen. Things like this have to be in demand.
And for now at least there is PBO works a treat on my 5900X and I can test on the fly.
The 5800 are a hot CPU and need a decent cooler what are you using for the CPU cooler

They released the final bios with AGESA 1.2.7.0. However, after reports that some people's systems have slowed down with the BETA version, I'm afraid to install this one.

Nah a 5800X3D is way faster for gaming. And no that max temp is not problem the cpu should be able to run at those themps for 24/7. I have seen Intel laptops run at 100+ all day long. Same goes for the AMD 290X GPU's they ran at 94c all the time. Its build for it.
But if you hit that temp the CPU will throttle down to make sure it wont go over its limit (in this case at 90c)

But yeah undervolting would fix it.
Like i said you can use PBO Tuner or Hydra 1.1E that helps a lot with temps if you lower the CO to -30 but it will lower the single thread boost a bit.

Its not out for my MSI Gaming Edge Wifi yet. If it is out i will test it.
Its quite easy to flash back so you can always test it yourself

Just do two 3DMark CPU Tests to get a baseline. Backup your settings in the OC Profile of the bios (write it to a USB stick)
Then try the new one. If you need to flash back to the old bios you can reload your settings quickly again. But only use the backed up settings for the old bios.

Dont know if it would accept loading agesa 1.2.0.6c Bios profiles in a newer bios.
But i alsways start from scratch.

I do make pictures of the dram timings, Voltages, Fan settings and PBO settings before i start the flash.

I'm asking again! Limit the max voltage but at least allow us to set a minimum! Easy task, MSI. Let's finish the AM4 line with a bang!!!

Hello, I was just thinking about this BIOS if I should put it on my B550 Gaming Edge Wifi. Right now It's running 1.2.0.6c and has significantly improved in performance over 1.2.0.5. How is 1.2.0.7? Better? Worse? I'm running a 5600X, so I don't need the X3D CPU support since I don't have that CPU. So for the "fTPM stutter" issue, unclear if I have that.
