Is anyone out there able to tell me why my steel series laptop has a fully chrged battery when shut down, then stored for 2 or 3 weeks, i go to power it up and it's dead flat. Clearly something is still alive in the laptop when it's shut down but what.
Thank you.
Hi mylesputnam69,
This website is for MSI products and this forum is for MSI gaming notebooks. I wasn't aware that SteelSeries had a line of notebooks, but if it does, you won't find any information about them here. On the other hand, if you have an MSI gaming notebook with a SteelSeries keyboard, then this is the correct place to post your questions and you need to provide your notebook's model name so we'll know what model you're talking about.
Generally speaking, the battery should
not drain in just 2-3 weeks
if the notebook is truly shut off. The battery will drain slowly, though. Many of the MSI hardware buttons (like the power button) are logic controls and they need active circuitry to recognize they've been pressed and respond accordingly. Without this low-level active circuitry running in the background, nothing would happen when you press the power button to turn on the notebook. This low-level system runs the EC firmware.
However, if the notebook is put into sleep mode (which is what normally happens when you close the lid or tap the power button while the notebook is on), the notebook doesn't turn off. What happens in sleep mode is the notebook goes into a low-power state where the display, SSD, HD and other components are suspended. But part of the notebook is still running. The battery power will drain much faster in sleep mode and 2-3 weeks sounds normal.
There's also a hibernate mode which is in between sleep mode and a full shut off. It will run down the battery faster than a full shut off but not as fast as sleep mode. If I'm not mistaken, Win 10 will use hibernate mode when you tell it to "Shut down" if it's configured for "fast startup". If this is the case, you'll need to disable this mode.
If you have an MSI gaming notebook and the battery is bad, you'll need to contact MSI Support/Service for help. This is just a volunteer user-to-user forum and you won't reach MSI Support/Service here.
Kind regards, David
