Battery on Claw A1M not fully charging

I’ve recently bought an MSI claw A1M. It’s now 3 weeks old and wont charge above 80% unless I take it off charge, do a power cycle and then plug it back in to charge.
I usually run in handheld mode and deplete the battery to between 10-30% them place on charge.
When the light goes out or say it’s charged and power it on it’s only at between 78-80% unless I power cycle and plug the charger back in.
I’ve tried the battery calibration tool but this didn’t solve it.
I also tried depleting down to 0% and once it went off I plugged the charger in and got no lights. I power cycled after 15 minutes and then switched it off to charge. It did charge to 100% after this but only for a single charge then it went back to 79-80%.
The battery charge setting is set to 100% in MSI centre and I’ve removed Microsoft Companion as I read it’s been known to cause battery issues on MSI Claw devices.
Is there something I’ve missed, is it just normal or is my Claw faulty ??

Thanks

You should try to do EC reset, and clean install Center M as well.

I’ve done both and it worked for one charge then went back to charging to 78-80% even though it’s set to 100% charge in the MSI centre.
It will charge to 100% but it needs a power cycle at 80% to charge the last 20%.

The battery stops charging at 80% to 90%.
This is a safety feature designed to protect the battery.
There is no need to charge the battery to 100%.
Charging the battery to 100% shortens its lifespan.
Instead of charging the battery to 100%,
charging it to 80% to 90%
will allow you to use the battery for a longer period
and reduce the time it takes for the battery to discharge.
It is not a problem
if the battery stops charging at 80% to 90%.
The battery is functioning normally, so you can continue using it.

I totally understand what you are saying about charge protection but I don’t think that’s the case. if I power cycle the claw and plug the charger back in it will charge up to 100%.
If what you say was correct it wouldn’t charge past 80% regardless of power cycling the device or not.
It seems once it hits 78-80% it stops charging (most of the time 78% so not even 80% and doesn’t even reach the 90% you mentioned even though MSI centre is set to 100%).
It’s like it gets to the point where the fast charging stops and instead of going into trickle charging it’s just cutting off and stops charging. Once its power cycled it will charge the rest of the way.
It was charging all the way to 100% for the first couple of weeks then just seemed to stop and now needs to be power cycled to get to anything above 78-80%.

Have you tried using a different charger?
There might be an issue with the power supply,
so try using a different cable first.

There was a video on YT recently, some poor soul spent years testing a bunch of devices with battery protection on vs off over many thousands of charge cycles and found no meaningful difference. Given the average lifespan of a device, the conclusion was to just enjoy a bit more battery life and forget about 'battery protection'.

Edit: so, I couldn't find the video, but I did fine one about fast charging that reached a similar conclusion. There is no meaningful impact on battery life.

I’ve found something over the last week.
If I charge my claw up and the battery is above 30% it will charge to 100%.
If the battery is lower than 30% when decide to charge it then it will only charge to 80% regardless of being set to 100%.
It could be completely normal, down to the battery charging circuit protection or even a faulty charger.
I’m gonna try getting a charger and see if that solves the problem.
