I'm starting a new topic with the idea of posting here any information regarding the BIOS update for the Msi Mag Z790 Tomahawk wifi DDR5 version. You can also share information about the stability, benefits, and issues of the update here.

A new version of the Bios has been released
7D91vH9
2023-11-08
Description:
- Updated CPU uCode.
- Updated Secure Boot mechanism.
- Updated OC Auto rules.
- P-core Beyond 6GHz+ feature optimized with i9 CPU.
- Intel APO function optimized.
- ME Firmware ver: ME_16.

Good luck ;)

You feel like you don't quite know your BIOS settings before you make the change. If I'm wrong, just set everything up like you had in 12B, including windmills. Try to compare bioses on the same default -default and oc-oc settings. As for firmware, you are not able to go back to previous versions, the system simply will not let it go.

I'm already back on 12b. I know the settings front to back. What I'm not understanding is why they won't stick. At all. No change I make stays. The performance is still the same, then I go back into the BIOS and everything is right back at default again.

Are your settings working?

I guess I should say back on a.80 with the microccode12B. The BIOS is back to A80, the microcode stayed though. As you've said, it will not let me change it. Hopefully the microcode is not the problem here. And I'm sorry, I don't know what windmills are, I'm going to guess the fans. If so, I've never touched any of that, I've actually never gone into the hardware section. I use software for my fan curves.

I guess we'll go back to the beta BIOS and see if I can change the settings in there. If It's still the same, I'm burnt until they release the next BIOS. Either way, I'm never changing the BIOS again. It even warned me about that, but oh no, I just had to mess with it. I never can help myself, maybe someday I'll learn.

Damn computers man.

nope, it will not take my settings no matter what I do. Good thing its a beta I guess. Everybody who installed it, double check its actually changing something when you make adjustments. Mine is not

I believe I know what's happening. I believe its performing a clear cmos every time the board shuts down. So I enter settings, save and reboot, and it clears the cmos. Or it's never actually saving to the cmos is more likely I guess. Cant imagine it's the battery, it's only 5 months old, and it was working fine before the update.

After each time I upload a new bios, I still do a reset using the button on the motherboard. Once, a simple reset in the BIOS settings caused me problems and reset using the button on the motherboard solved the problem.

Tech support had me clear CMOS by jumping the pins at batt1. It did not fix it, still the same problem. Awaiting their response again.

Personally, I think this BIOS update took out the CMOS somehow. Butt, we'll see. That's exactly what it's acting like.

Well, board is going in for an RMA. Honestly, I think I'm going to buy a carbon MAX while it's gone and just keep this board as back up in case this ever happens again.

No idea how a BIOS update can ruin the CMOS. But, maybe hold off on this update if you were smart enough to have done so thus far.

That’s barmy! Although, in the world of PR spin, this would be classified as “User error.” The error being that you hit the Update button… :(

Yep, true enough. A couple of days before, an article came across my feed about one final update needed for specific circumstances, such as long run times with small power draw. So I was expecting a new BIOS to be coming. I definitely did not need it, but can't ever seem to help myself. So, it's gonna cost me again.

I don't see how a new BIOS cant fix the issue, since a BIOS update caused it in the first place. Maybe it will, they did not say. They just said to send in the board. At my expense, naturally.

I hear ya! Although, as I have started preaching to those who will listen, having two motherboards (even if one or both are budget motherboards) is almost a mandatory thing these days. Motherboards have a lot of complex components that can give up the ghost at any time. And if you're really unlucky, you can't find or justify (due to cost) a replacement for your particular chipset. Plus, it really helps in the troubleshooting department. You are definitely doing the right thing getting a second board. We literally have to be our own repair shops these days...unless of course you happen to live a mile (1.6 km) down the road from Mr. Citay! ;)

So, I actually fixed it. It was a combination of a tv issue and just plain ignorance.

The issue was my tv handshakes pretty slowly, especially with this PC. I've never seen this screen before, but after a clear cmos, there is a brief screen that says hit f1 to reset. Just this morning I saw that out of the corner of my eye, just barely. Usually the tv handshakes too late to see it. So I cleared cmos again and ran upstairs fast as I could. Scared the crap out of the dogs, but anyway, sure enough, there it was again. So I hit f1 and it reset something, presumably something that isn't reset by a clear cmos I guess, right?

Anyway, I could instantly tell it fixed it because when I would punch in a setting, it would change in real-time, just like it used to.

Finished putting in my usual, hit f10. Went right back into the BIOS and everything stayed. Finally.

Can't believe I blew it for that long. Actually, I can totally believe it.

So, any idea when this bios update is coming out of beta? Not sure how crucial it is compared to the plethora of stability updates we had last year but I’m not fond of applying beta bios updates.

I'm in the same situation as you, waiting for the BIOS is out of beta. This new update is supposed to be an optimization of the previous version, mainly focused on situations of little use of the computer, for example, when you leave it on without really doing anything, as is my case many times, since I almost never turn it off even if I leave home.

Interesting - so not essential then? I also leave my PC for hours at a time doing nothing and I haven't noticed any instability or issues... yet.

If I don’t leave my PC on for days at a time, am I good in the short term while we wait for the stable version? Anyone know?

I’m guessing this isn’t as serious as the micro code issues from last summer?

I know there are likely a fair number of summer vacations going on, but is it normal for a beta BIOS to last this long? [7D91vHH1(Beta version) - 2025-05-22]

Betas has no expire dates, there is also no any guarantees that any official in name will follows or when to follows.
Beta is just the name, and normally the same reliable as other official names.
