Components:
MB: Msi X570 A-Pro
GPU: Msi RX 6700 XT 12GB GDDR6
PSU: EVGA 850 G3
RAM: G. SKILL Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2 x 16GB)
Previous CPU: Ryzen 7 2700 Pinnacle Ridge (Zen+)
New CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

So I purchased a new CPU. Installed it. Cleared the BIOS (or whatever it is that clears when you remove that disc shaped battery; M-BIOS or whatever). Turned the PC on and it doesn't post and the CPU EZ Debug light is on. After some research I updated the BIOS (copied the BIOS update file to a pendrive, renamed it to MSI.ROM, stuck it in the PC and pressed the bios flash button). Update seems to have gone smoothly - slow blinking for a few seconds then rapid blinking for a few minutes before it restarted itself. I shut it off, left it unplugged for a while, and when I turn it back on the CPU EZ Debug light is off but the PC still won't post and now 2 other EZ Debug lights are on: the BOOT light and the VGA light. I've removed and reinstalled all components and it still shows the same thing: VGA and BOOT lights on.

Help.

It sounds like the BIOS update worked for CPU compatibility, but now the issue may be with GPU detection or boot device configuration. Try reseating the GPU, checking power connections, and testing a different video output. Also ensure your boot drive is properly connected—clearing CMOS may have reset boot priorities.

So, following the advice elsewhere, I installed the old CPU and the computer booted up without a glitch. I made sure the BIOS was updated via the M-FLASH option within the BIOS then reinstalled the new CPU and nothing changed; still getting the BOOT and VGA lights :(

I give up. I cant get my PC to work now even with the old CPU. I think I may have damaged soemething with all this building, taking apart and putting back together. I cant even get it to update the BIOS using a pendrive and the flash buttin on the MB. I think I'm just going to buy a new full combo of MB + CPU + RAM. Any recommendations that will go well with my current GPU and will allow for future upgrades?

Woooooo! Nevermind. Was able to get it to work with the pre-upgrade / pre-problem components. I'm returning the 5800X3D and just forgetting about upgrading for now until I can upgrade to a more modern AM5 Socket Board and CPU. Any suggestions that will go well with my current GPU will still be greatly appreciated.

Possible Solutions for BOOT & VGA Debug Lights:
  1. BIOS Version Check
    • Ensure you’re on the latest BIOS (e.g., 7C37vHL or newer for X570 A-Pro). The 5800X3D needs AGESA 1.2.0.7 or later.
  2. GPU & Power Check
    • Reseat the GPU firmly in the top PCIe slot.
    • Ensure PCIe power cables are fully connected to the GPU and PSU (if modular).
  3. Boot Drive & Cables
    • Reconnect SATA/NVMe drives and check if the BOOT light persists. Try booting with only one drive.
  4. Clear CMOS Again
    • Power off, unplug PSU, and short the JBAT1 pins (or remove CMOS battery) for 5+ minutes to reset BIOS settings.
  5. Test Minimal Setup
    • Remove all but 1 RAM stick (try different slots), disconnect non-essential peripherals, and retest.
  6. Monitor Connection
    • Ensure the display cable is plugged into the GPU (not motherboard) and the monitor is on the correct input.
