Boot loop with bios 7E51v1A24 with MAG x870 Tomahawk motherboard

So, I been posting all my problems on this subreddit and slowly been able to fix one by one.

But now with the latest firmware there seems to be a boot loop that happens and it is because a certain USB device is plugged into the USB 5G port (at least in my experience this is what it was, and I think the middle one was the cause, if the location matters)

I believe the exact kind of wire it was a USB-A to USB-B 2.0 Cable - it looks like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BCWALHM?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&th=1 (not the exact brand I am using though)

Once I unplugged this completely it worked.

Never once had an issue with this bios till I placed in sleep mode once, then this boot loop started. Not sure if related, but that was the only thing I did different since I had this bios. I just went to sleep with my computer like two days ago or something and now this issue is happened.

Confirming same behavior with MAG x870e Godlike after upgrading to the 1/22/25 bios, 7E48v1A24. Mine appears to be related to a USB-C to USB-B cable going to a usb hub on my monitor from one of the USB-C 10G ports. Read in a different post that disabling Legacy USB Support in bios may fix, but did not fix for me. Only fix is to either unplug the hub during boot or a hard reset during the boot loop, which occasionally will allow it to post/boot.

In my case, the USB hub is on my monitor and becomes active when the monitor becomes active. So...grasping for straws...but wonder if it's related to the hub initialization happening when the monitor first turns on in the middle of the boot process instead of at the start, causing the boot to "crash out"...

Same behaviour on my MSI x870e Carbon Pro I had the bios for 6 days updated and then suddenly a boot loop. Unplugging my monitor usb hub made the Windows Boot again but I downgraded my Bios to the December version.
Hopefully it'll work now as it was before :/

In my MAG x870 Tomahawk, have a USB 3 hub, a USB 2 hub, and two USB 3 hubs in monitors. None work using older BIOSs until Windows starts. With the latest BIOS (A24), a boot loop until I unplug all hubs. It appears that MSI motherboards don't like talking to hubs.

I had to go back a BIOs verison cause it just kept happening.
See this post and add your info or PM it to me.

I opened a ticket with MSI support. They confirm that the motherboard (MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI in my case) doesn't work with USB hubs and it may be added in a future BIOS update.

Ticket:
Motherboard doesn't work with USB hubs

Content:
Have checked but the current version of the bios does not appear to have a feature for enabling the hubs in the bios environment, ill see about reporting the issue for any future updates

Nice to know I did let them know it appears to be connected to USB devices on Friday and this is more Proof it is linked to USB

The more info we get the more they know where to look.

Its notable to mention that the X870 Tomahawk already implements a usb hub and usb controller onboard to provide the back panel x4 usb 2.0 (Genesys Logic GL850 usb hub) and x3 usb 3.1 5G (Genesys Logic GL3523 usb controller). These are not found on the X870E version.

The X870E Tomahawk derives all it's rear panel USB I/O from either the CPU or Chipset (shares the same 2x USB 40G controller as the non "E").

It's been my experience that usb hubs and lesser known usb controller chips can introduce variability in performance with certain low latency devices and cause compatibiity issues. It's often explicitly advised to use native implementation of the chipset or cpu when possible.

Interestingly, the recently released B850 Tomahawk keeps the GL850 4x usb 2.0 hub from the X870, but replaces the 3x usb 3.1 GL3523 controller with one chipset derived usb 3.1 5G port. The B850 version also maintains two cpu derived 10G USB C ports where the 40G ports on the X models were but you don't lose them to the 2nd NVME slot. Also noticed the board / connector layout of the B850 matches the X870E version more than the X870 non E, which could suggest the X870 board layout was revised for the newer X870E and B850 Tomahawk.

tp-link uh720 usb3.0 hub does not work with blue ports on the backplane. device's itself is shown, but the devices connected to it are not. if i connect it to black ports which are i think usb 2.0 everything works but at usb 2.0 speed. this board is a mess. i wish i have waited for another brand. i knew that msi boards are not reliable from my very old experiences. it seems that nothing has changed on msi's side for years. time has passed, i can not return it now.

Everything went south when we wanted faster USB speeds LoL. Good ol reliable USB 2.0. At this rate we "might" have everything fixed by bios version 99... USB 3.0 dropouts still happen on my MSI gaming edge running my Intel 9700k... Never fixed. Bring back PS/2 ports I say!
