My B550-A Pro mobo is not recognizing all storage drives. I started out with an SSD (SH hynix Gold S31) and a DVD/CD drive. The BIOS recognized the disc drive fine, but not the SSD. I switched the power and SATA cables going to the disc drive onto the SSD and vice versa. Again, BIOS recognized the disc drive but not the SSD.

Left the disc drive in and tried several different SSDs and HDDs that I know are good because I just took them out of a bunch of computers after reformatting them.

Finally found one very old HDD from a laptop that was recognized by BIOS. Was able to install Windows on it, but it's so old that it's unbearably slow.

What I really want to do is use my new SSD as the OS drive and a couple of the newer drives, I pulled out of the old machines, as backup storage.

I've tried so many combinations that I'm at the point where I just want to chuck everything against the wall. SO frustrating.

Oh, a couple of other things I tried. None of which solved the problem:
- Flash the BIOS with the latest version
- Pull out CMOS battery to reset everything
- Change from UEFI mode to Legacy (or Compatibility. Can't remember exact term)

Anyone else experienced this or have any suggestions on what I can do next?

My hardware is:
- MSI B550-A Pro motherboard
- G. Skill Ripjaws V Series 32GB (2x16GB)
- AMD Ryzen 7 5700G

Appreciate any help.

What is "everything else" and how do you know it's SATA3?

No m.2 drives.
Sata 3.0 has been around for over 10 years at this point, so everything new using sata is 3.0. Everything else is referring to the drives you tried. At this point it's looking like something wrong with either the apu or motherboard.

Can you take a screenshot of your BIOS using the F12 key and save to USB drive formatted to fat32 then post them to forum one of your main BIOS page and one of Hardware monitor if you have a faulty chipset it may well show up in the setting on one of them two pages.

I noticed you in CFM mode and not UEFI can you change bios to UEFI to see if it helps or not and as to Hotswap makes it no difference to SATA SSD detection unless PC is already powered on when you do a Drive swap You only need Hotswap on if you swap out Drives while PC is booted up.

One more thing while i looked at your BIOS screenshots, you're not using XMP for your RAM. It's sitting at DDR4-2133 @ 1.2V.
So you should enable the first A-XMP profile to get the advertised DDR4-3600 @ 1.35V.

Yes, I'll get those screenshots posted when I get home.

The screenshot I posted before is just a snapshot of one of the MANY combinations I've tried.

Thanks

Oh, I'm really glad you mentioned that. I wondered why the speed was only 2133, but I was going to get back to that once I figured out the main problem.

Thanks

OK, I gave up and just got another SSD. Got an M.2 one this time and it worked with no problem.

Talked to SK hynix support and they said to create an RMA for the old one.

So, my original problem is no longer an issue. Looks like the new SSD somehow was damaged or stopped working properly. Whatever the cause, I just couldn't deal with it anymore.

THANK YOU everyone for your feedback and patience with all my questions.

I have a different issue now, but I'll create a new post for that so as not to clog this one up

Well i'll be honest i didn't see that one coming. Glad you have it sorted(kinda) though.

Okay, so the m.2 drive works. How about the SATA though? Is that working for other drives you may want to use?
Yes, the SATA ports and cables work. I tried 7 older drives and 4 of them worked as well as the CD/DVD drive. So, I don't think my problem is with the SATA ports/cables.
Before someone says "but was it just a problem with a specific SATA port or cable?" I tested each drive on every port (gawd, was that a PITA!) I suppose someone could say a cable was bad because I did NOT test every single cable, but I doubt that was the issue because I did test the SSD with a cable I knew worked.

Again, thanks everyone for your replies. It's nice to have a place to ask questions without being shamed or trolled for not knowing something.
