TLDR - Just reporting some bug. I tried three times updating to BIOS 7C59v17 from 7C59v16. The update itself seems to go fine but when the PC reboots it eventually hangs at Code 06, at which point USB ports and the display don't work. Was able to get the computer working again all three times by using the "Flash BIOS Button" on the back panel (thanks for that!) with the 16 BIOS renamed to MSI.ROM on a FAT32 flash drive. I did try multiple downloads of the 17 ROM zip as well with no difference. FYI, the third time while on the 16 BIOS, I reset the BIOS settings before flashing 17 - still no difference.

Hi!

I built this PC almost a year and a half ago. The PC was crashing every once in a while (at least once or twice a week) out of the blue, and some basics I tried didn't help so I decided to check for updates to drivers. I noticed that there's the new BIOS 7C59v17 that came out May 18, 2022, so I thought I would try that first thing before updating drivers.

I didn't have the PC overclocked.

I've updated BIOS many, many times over the last 30 years, and my desktop is on a UPS, so no power issues. I initiated the process through MSI Center's Live Update (Advanced) option.

Everything seemed to be going okay, the BIOS was definitely updating - showing it in progress on the screen. I stepped out of the room for a minute or two, came back, and the desktop was powered on but the screen is completely blank. I tried leaving it on for 10 minutes, but nothing changed, so I powered it off, and even unplugged it. I left it off for 5-10 minutes and then plugged it back in and turned it on. The fans start up fast like they always do, and then slow down to what I'm used to it sounding like when the BIOS settings kick in, and nothing else happens.

I eventually notice that the Debugging LED shows Code 06, which is "Microcode loading". Again, no display or USB ports working - I had tried a known working wired keyboard and the various LEDs for Caps Lock et cetera never even come on. I'm sure this is expected when this motherboard hangs at Code 06, but I just wanted to include for completeness sake.

I never tried the Beta of 17 while it was available, although I do have a copy of it.

If I get the energy, maybe I'll try the Beta of 17 which is no longer available but I had already downloaded before, just to see what happens. FYI, it takes a very long time to reboot any time because I have to 2x 24-drive SAS drive cards (total of 36 out of 48 drives hooked up at the moment) and the PC just takes a long time to get past POST with those controller cards.

Try to use M-FLASH to update BIOS instead of Live Update(Advanced).
Have you tried to boot with minimum setup on BIOS 7C59v17?

Hi, thanks @fatedust. Not a bad idea, and certainly a possibility for me to at least eliminate, even though the BIOS flashing itself appears to work, but that's a good point. I will test this (and I still have to test the 1.7 Beta as well) when I have the opportunity - hopefully soon.

I'll get back to you about those attempts.

Yes. The first time I flashed 7C59v17 and the computer hung on reboot, and after resetting the computer, to force reboot again still hung, I then pressed the reset BIOS button on the back panel. Further, before the third time I flashed 7C59v17, I reset the BIOS to the factory settings.
