i bought the CR48-B (MS-8348B) burner, and i have had alot of trouble with it, it doesnt seem to be compatable with many cdrs at all. i bought a 50 pack of memorex 700mb 80minute 40x cd-rs, no matter what speed i burn at the drive wont burn correctly. sometimes it doesnt even burn, it just burns the lead in and out but and acts like it burns the data but nothing is actually burned onto the data portion of the cd. all it does is write to the TOC and give my little brother a new shiny toy to play with. if anyone knows whats wrong please help me out. if there is a list of recomended cdr brand could someone send it please. or MSI put out a hardware flash update. thanks

Yes mine is set at UDMA 2. It isn't even recognized by XP it just says ATAPI CD-RW 48x16. It mostly runs at 32x and it takes 5 more min. to lead out of the burn. Taking a total of almost 10 min. to burn.

Ivar,

What OS are you running?

What are the specs of your computer?

Which software are you using to burn with?

Are you running any Virus Smasher programs?

Richard

I am running Nrton 2002 anti-virus software

Feirbrand,

Are you using WinXP to burn or Nero? Some versions of Nero has problems with WinXP.

You could also try turning off Notron when you are trying to burn.

Good Luck,

Richard

I am using Nero 5.5.9.9 and I turned off XP's burning ability. I have tried several different versions of Nero and they all do the same thing. I also tried to uninstall Norton and it still acts up.

Have you tried removing Nero and burning with WinXP?

I want to see if it is hardware related or software related problems.

Richard

XP doesn't recognize and CD-R or CD-RW I put into the drive. It keeps saying that there is no disk in the drive. CDRWIN doesn't recognize the drive as a CD burner.
Fireburner only writes at 8x.

I was able to burn but had to turn it down to 16x. I manually installed the ASPI drivers. I got them from Roxio's web site. Once I turned it down it recognized the CD and started burning. I just did a clean install of my hard drive because I just got the ATI 9700 and XP SP1 and didn't use nero. As you can see without Nero I can only get to 16x and with Nero I could reach 32x with a 5+ min. lead out

Thank you for the link however I had already tried those solutions. Microsoft was the first to hear my complaint.

Feirbrand,

I think it has something to do with the O.S. and ASPI. If it is not too much work for you, I would make a clean install WinXP. Try burning with it at full speed. Maker sure you have good Media to burn with.

If that fails then I would look at the problem being the drive.

With all the burning programs you have installed on your system I would go with clean OS before considering the drive bad.

Richard

WHen I tested this I had done a clean install each time and those were the results I got. This last time I just left them off. It reads fine but won't burn properly or isn't recognized. Should it be recognized as an MSI or just an ATAPI 48x16. I am using the 4.71 ASPI drivers.

Feirbrand,

I do not remember, have you tried different media? It could be a problem with the media you are trying to burn.

If that does not work, I am out of ideas, it could be a firmware upgrade needed or a bad drive.

Richard

I have tried everything you can think of. I guess I can wait and see if the new processer I am getting Tuesday works if not its back to the shelves for this thing

I think I have found the problem. I uninstalled Symantec's software rather then just disable it. And now the burner is working again. There seems to be a conflict with Norton's sofwater line.
