Can internal USB 3.0 on MAG mobos connect to USB extender on back plate?

Yep, you can. But usually, the case will also have USB 3.0 ports on the front or on top, for which you also need that internal header. So either you need a board with two of those USB 3.0 internal headers (rare), or you need to decide between more ports on the rear or those on the front of the case.

Okay, I understand.

All of the MAG B550 (eg Tomahawk/gaming edge etc) list 2 internal usb headers so I think that will work, I'll use one for the back panel. I thin k you can see two of them at the bottom edge of this photo

No, those are two USB 2.0 headers. It has:

1x Type-C internal header (below the 24-pin ATX header) for one port
1x USB 3.0 internal pin header (the wide one with the plastic around it) for two ports
2x USB 2.0 internal pin headers (the narrower ones without plastic around it) for two ports each

Ah, gotcha, thanks.

Kind of frustrating about the lack of USB on these boards, compared to a much older/cheaper MSI Z97 GAMING 5 which I am replacing. It has 8 USB 2.0/3.0 on the back plate compare to 5 on the MAG B550 motherboards.

Worst come to worst, you can use an external USB 3.0 hub. But yeah, i hate when they are stingy with rear and internal USB ports.

I loved my previous Z390 ACE in regards to that, check it out: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-Z390-ACE/Gallery

9+1 USB ports on the rear, 2x (!) USB-C internal, 2x (!) USB 3.0 internal, 2x USB 2.0 internal, and i basically used all of them. My newer Z590 board has less ports again, and they all tend to offer only one internal USB 3.0 nowadays, i don't know what happened there. Don't people need more USB ports?

Yeh I don't get this either. All the fancy mumbo jumbo specifications on the board, but without the basics it's not much use. Your previous mobo had an abundance!
  1. My 6 rear USB requirements:
  2. Logitech Steering wheel
  3. Webcam
  4. Keyboard
  5. BT dongle for XBox controller
  6. External HD (Backups)
  7. VR Breakout box
All of the B550 MAG mobos only have 5 USBs on the backplate so something would have to go - I could put the webcam on the front of the case as its only used occasionally. Still, its a bit of faffing around for something that's meant to be an upgrade, not a backward step.

An PCI USB extender would be another £30.

The X570 still only has 5 USB Type As on the backplate (same as 550) , but it does have 3 extra on the front.
depends on the board some have more on the back but it all comes down to price and I think the B550 Unify boards have more than 5 on the back but people also seem to have a lot of problems with them
