Can no longer control laptop keyboard backlight

After installing a big windows 10 update last week, I can no longer control my laptop keyboard led backlights.

It used to work fine from the "MSI dragon center" "LED Wizard" interface, but now whatever I click in there, nothing seems to have any effect on the keyboard lights.

It is currently stuck in cycling over all colors, slightly blinking.
While pretty, it is very distracting and annoying, and I would like to be able to put it in one color and keep it that way.

I can still use the "fn" key with keypad "+" and "-" key to dim or brighten it, but I can no longer pick a stable color or make it stop flashing.

What can I do to fix this so I can control the lights again?

If we can't make it work in MSI dragon center or another UI I'm also comfortable editing any files manually if necessary. Or use some API. As a developer I have some patience for this.
