CD-drive only works in PIO mode

that about says it, if i set it to DMA it vanishes. the drive is ms-8156 and my friend has the MSI DVD drive and it also has the same problem.we are running Windows XP. any suggestions please.

It hapens with some of ide controlers bad ide drivers for XP.
I had that problem with Chaintech 7AJA2 and Teac 40X until I updated latest drivers for my MB.
If that doesnt work try upgrading firmware of your CD drive.
