cd-writer freezing up on burn

Is anyone out there able to help.

I have bought a new cd writer it is a dragon writer 40/12/48 e-ide internal MSI.

Here is what happened.

I loaded it and used it once to backup data that all worked ok.

Then I reformatted my C: drive, installed windows 98 and everything else that goes with it. Reinstalled everything for cd writer.

When I try to write a disc, as soon as I hit the burn button my whole pc freezes and the only way to get up and running again is to switch the power off at the main socket. Unable to use the reset on pc to do this.

I am using nero burning rom.

I have checked my cd writer and it comes up with a code of 00000 which when you look up the the codes it means no sense. Unfortunately it does not tell you how to fix this.

Can anyone please, please help as I am getting really frustrated now.

Thanks. ;(

Hi!

The first thing to notice is that your cd-writer is not in the list of supported recorders for Nero, which can be found here.

It is only a reconstruction-from-distance of course but my guess would be that the new cd-writer worked once because the system did not (have to) recognise the new writer and by coincidence the drivers and settings of the old writer worked with the new one also.
Now that you did a new install, the writer needs to be recognised "from scratch" by Windows 98 and Nero ...

Will the drive be recognised by Windows (it should be, according to the datasheet on this site) and can you use it for reading data/playing music? - if that is possible, that would pinpoint the problem to Nero and you will have top keep a close watch on the Nero updates (5.5.90 at present, which version do you use?) ...

Hope this helps,

Hans

I have downloaded 5.5.9.0 this still has not fixed the problem.

When I go into device manager, settings under writer there is no dma box to tick.

Any more help would be really appreciated.

Thanks ;(

Did you install the intel ultra ATA storage drivers?
If you install them you lose manual control over DMA and I have found them to be prone to problems.

Uninstall them and just use the intel inf.

Yeah

I have fixed it.

Thanks to all of you that helped.

My fix is as follows.

Went into device manager and removed the hard drive controllers. Shut down pc, when pc started again it reinstalled my drivers and then when I looked under cd writer I was able to enable the dma which it what I think was the problem all along.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and help.

:D
