Christmas present to myself.

I recently upgraded my gaming rig from an FX-6300 CPU to a Ryzen 5 5600X with an MSI B550-A Pro motherboard. I kept the Radeon RX 470 graphics card. It still plays my games but is right at the edge with Forza Horizon 5 and Far Cry 6. I decided to bite the bullet and get a new card as a Christmas present to myself. I won't say what I paid for it except to say it's $150 less than what it's going for in most places. The card I am getting Tuesday is the PowerColor Red Devil Radeon RX 6600XT with 8gb DDR6 VRAM. It's a big upgrade.

The card came today, a day early. It installed without a hitch. I didn't even have to do anything with the drivers. It picked up the driver the 470 had been using which is the latest one for both cards. Games play great and the card runs extremely cool. In Forza Horizon 5 it hits a max of 58C while the CPU is at 69. Now, I'm running at 1080p without HDR because my monitor doesn't support it. It's only a 75mhz 24" Acer. I guess a new monitor is next on the upgrade list.

Bought a new ACER Nitro RG241Y monitor. It's 24",1080p, IPS, 165 hz max refresh rate, has FreeSync and HDR. It works great but after trying out the HDR, I turned it back off. It doesn't make a whole lot of difference and I like how things look without it better. I also tried the AMD version of ray tracing and didn't like that either. I like the shadows sharp.

Yep Don't think windows dose so well with HDR it looks washed out on 4K TV on desktop, Is OK in some Movies but that is about it I think MS have lots more work to do for HDR to work correctly. And I don't have Ray Tracing on all ways turn it off.

I still have my MSI 970 Gaming motherboard with the same processor. It's in the box in the closet.
I still say that the FX-6300 got a bad rap. In my experience, it was a powerful, capable chip that handled everything I threw at it. I could still play my games with it including the Forza Horizon series and World of Warcraft, The Witcher 3, Resident Evil : Village and others on at least medium settings. I had just been contemplating going to Ryzen for a while and when I saw a MB/CPU combo on Amazon for a good price, I jumped on it. It has been a huge upgrade but the 6300 lives on. I put the old motherboard with the CPU and RAM into an old eMachines ET-1810 case and it runs great. It's using the eMachines 250 watt power supply and it works even with an Nvidia GT 1030 card installed. (the first Nvidia card I have ever owned btw)

Everything runs so cool. This is after playing World of Warcraft for an hour on the highest settings. Believe it or not, WoW stresses the system more than Forza does.
