Hello There!

Just finished building new PC! Used parts below:

- AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor
- Corsair iCUE H150i ELITE CAPELLIX XT 65.57 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
- MSI MAG X870 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM5 Motherboard
- G.Skill Trident Z5 RGB 64 GB DDR5-6400 CL32 Memory (x4)
- Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive (x2)
- MSI VENTUS 3X OC GeForce RTX 4080 16 GB Video Card

Was able to get it to boot and get to windows install menu. Once it got to its first system update for windows, it rebooted and got stuck floating between codes 36-38. I'm thinking it's posted and that I'm just seeing the temp check, but I'm not experiencing any I'm just guessing.

I've tried :

* Flash bios update with latest bios for mobo. I ensured I have it in root, plugged into proper port for flash as well.
* I've tried resetting the ram cards in different ways (cards in A1 & B1, A1 & A2, just A1, and none at all). I get different codes, but usually 15, A6, or 10. Not much progress made there, so I am currently back to all 4 in, latest flash installed.
* When I boot, I sometimes get to the BIOS load screen, but it appears to freeze while loading.
* It seems if I tap F11 quick enough I can see what I am booting from, and attached an image for this view. If I choose the windows boot it freezes and fluctuates between 36/38 again.
* I will leave it alone for an extended period (30-60 min) and the most it does is power down without coming back up.


What am I missing here? I checked some prior posts but they were usually with slightly different hardware. Looking for next thing to check. I am a layman (smooth brain, mouth breather, needs short sentences, ect.) and much of the hardware building was done with friends who were more experienced in building. Having a job in IT I felt I could take it where we left off (built and needi g windows installed) and thought "how hard could it be". It's actually tricky come to find. So be gentle.

Debug LED displays system temperature while in OS. . Not sure why it reboots with black screen, but I'd prob try remove the graphics card first and use iGPU for testing.
Also, try use only 2 stick memory and see if it gets better.

It's a little after 9:30pm here (Baltimore, USA) so I will try that tomorrow afternoon after work. While waiting I tried shifting to 2 memory sticks in A2 &. B2 and that got me to a windows menu error, so idk progress? But then after I selected reboot it went back to 36/37/38

Two XMP-only kits combined, with an aggressive XMP profile, this is not a good idea. Especially for AM5, you want a kit of two modules only, with an EXPO profile.

As you can see in this recent video from Linus Tech Tips for example, on an X670E Carbon Wifi with a 7950X3D, the 4x 16 GB refusing to run at EXPO speeds is the one thing that did not work properly on that PC. In this follow-up video, he states again that this was the only mistake that was made, not using 2x 32 GB when you want 64 GB total. And this is totally correct, especially for AM5.

Any total RAM capacity you want, with DDR5, try to reach it with two modules only. If you really need anywhere close to 64 GB of RAM for your workloads, then you're in a tough spot, it will only work at a low speed. So you sacrifice performance for higher total RAM capacity. This is only a good idea for professional workloads, where having less RAM would cause much greater slowdowns. For normal use including gaming, this would be silly, there you don't need more than 2x 16 GB, and since that results in half the stress on the memory system compared to four modules, as well as being mich better electrically on the memory bus, it can be stable at much higher speeds.

Yes, CPU temperature, as mentioned. It's past its checks and it thinks everything is A-OK.

Did it take 5-8 minutes and then rebooted?

Use two in A2+B2, four modules on AM5 is asking for trouble (as mentioned), and we need to rule out trouble from this end for now. Actually you can think about leaving the other kit out permanently. For gaming, there is zero need for 64 GB RAM from four modules, just makes everything worse. 2x 16 GB is more than plenty. If you feel the need for 64 GB, think about returning both kits and get one kit of 2x 32 GB with a maximum speed of DDR5-6400 and an EXPO profile for AM5 (XMP is more for Intel, EXPO is more for AMD AM5). You'll find that the EXPO kits stop around DDR5-6400 anyway, because the AMD CPU's memory controllers are not as advanced as Intel's.

Hmm, if it does that, it could be in Windows, and the energy plan sets it into standby. Then when you'd press the power button it should wake back up.

What's your PSU model?

This is a mountain of (at a glance) really really helpful guidance. Will absolutely stick with two sticks, and will check for that firmware update. Was only checking for bios, and totally left that out.


In regards to the BIOS update time, it was a little less than 10 min then reboot. I think your thought on perhaps a windows power setting is certainly something I'd have overlooked.

Psu is:

MSI MAG A850GL PCIE5 850 W 80+

I'll have about an hour to tinker tonight. I was hoping try unplugging GPU as suggested prior, but may try once more with A2/B2 card position and CMOMing them again, perhaps it is just that it's not booting back up on its own and I'm being impatient
 
I'm having this exact issue (Windows install, code 38, etc.). Does anyone have an answer on what fixed this for them?

My build is a little bit different, but I'm seeing the exact same problem. I originally had my BIOS set to the XMP profile. Then I tried with the default RAM speeds, & loosening my cooler mount a small amount.

I'll probably just go through each piece of advice in here one by one tomorrow, but I'd love if I got the answer that resolved OP's issue.
