My college bound son is looking for a laptop. He'll be studying mathematics and computers. Recommendations and why... Much appreciated.

Price expectations? What's it gonna be used for (just web browsing and microsoft office, or more demanding tasks)? Region? Preferred screen size? Weight?
Your question is very vague, and even modern android phone would fit the vague requirement.

Thank you for your questions. Use - College course work in French, Calculus, mathematics/statistics and computer studies. Region - MN/WI ie US Midwest. He told me the tech specs and mentioned several brands. Screen size = medium to large. Weight probably not an issue rather quality.

What specs did he mention?
Screen size - actual size in inches would help. Large for some would be 17.3", for others above 20"(yes there are laptops with 20inch screens).

Realistically, for college, assuming he doesn't care about gaming that much, then something simple would work.
As someone who WAS in college years ago, I can say that a lighter laptop would have been preferred back then for me. I would stick to a 15"/15.6"/16" laptop.
Outside of that, anything with good storage (1TB SSD or more), and at least 16GB of RAM would easily serve the purpose.

Overall, I would expect to pay somewhere in the $1k to $1500 price range.

It would help to know perhaps where you'd be purchasing from, as retailers/online stores can vary quite a bit with what stock they have.

Something like the Summit Flip would be good as it can be used with a stylus, so may be useful as it can be used to wright on to the screen. May make doing math equations taking notes and stuff a bit easier
