CPU Fan not detected on Z690

Just built a new system using MSI PRO Z690-A WIFI DDR5.

The CPU cooler is a Noctua NH-U12S, it is plugged into the CPU connector (not pump or ext) and it does spin just fine.

It is a PWM fan and it is set as such in BIOS. I am on the latest BIOS, 7D25vA3.

Problem: the CPU cooler is not detected by BIOS, showing 0 rpm in Hardware Monitor.

I think the issue is that the fan's speed is quite low, and the BIOS "decides" that there is a problem with the fan.

If I disable Q-Control for this fan, it starts to spin up and the BIOS does start showing the fan as spinning once it gets to about 800 RPM's (ultimately it reaches 1600).

If I enable Q-Control again, the fan starts to spin down and I can see it go 1600 - 1400 - 1200 and so on, and once it gets below about 800 RPMs, the Hardware Monitor again starts showing 0 RPM (fan not detected).

MSI - can this please be fixed?

Specifically, can you lower the threshold for "fan is spinning too slow -> treat as not detected" in the BIOS, so that low speed fans can be used?

The minimum fan RPM the MB can identify shall depend on the IO controller of each MB.

If I toggle the CPU type fan setting back and forth between PWM and Voltage (in BIOS Hardware Monitoring), then each time it does show the actual RPM - between 350 and 450 - for a second or two, then goes back to zero.

So I think the hardware is fine.

Looks like it's a BIOS issue - there is a piece of code that goes "CPU fan rpm is too low - can't possibly be true - treat as fan not detected".

MAG Z690 DDR4 Tomahawk with Intel 12600k cpu. No fan RPM in BIOS, or Hardware monitor! Running a bequiet 240mm AIO (4 wire) with both fans plugged into a splitter, then pluged into the CPU header. What the hell is going on. Also, sent email to MSI about other issues. No response. I will flame them if they don't respond. Could have bought any motherboard I wanted. Chose MSI, looks like a big mistake.

I have exactly your problem (RPM=0), same mobo (but DDR5), same processor, different cooling (Noctua NH-D15 with 2 fans also plugged into splitter). I will experiment tomorrow, in particular will try not to use a splitter as it may confuse the BIOS when it tries to sense the RPM. Will report here if I find something useful.

The problem seems to be solved with the latest BIOS update (H.40).
