can anyone tell me what media is compatible with this writer at the highest speeds it is SUPPOSSED to burn?!??!?
I paid a lot of money searching by trial and error for compatible media. If I had invested all this money in the first place, I would have bought a TEAC. But, now I;m stuck with a MSI burner and I would like to make the best of it. So, does anyone know the compatible media?
Here's what I learned from my experience:
Memorex CDRWs (HIGHSPEED)16-24x does not work.
Philips 1-12x does not work

Traxdata CDRW 10x 700 mb WORKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!]
But since I have a fast burner, I'd kinda like to burn fast and leave no smoke :))
Thanks.

PS: I have firmware update 160D, use Nero as it came retailed with this, XP SP1,...
Could it be that this firmware update is messed up? I havent tried to use cdrw media before flashing it....But I remember INCD turning green when I inserted a Memorex that now doesn't work anymore... ;(

From what I can understand you have problems with cd-rw discs only. Have you tried burning at max speed in cd-r? Does it work ok? Have you tried contacting MSI asking about recomended media? It would also be good to use the latest nero 5.5.10.20 . Who told u that teac recorders are better? My CR-52A2 came with a cd-rw disc in the package. What about yours? Have you tried this disk?

I tried only some RAMEDIA CDRs, the box said tehy were 48 x, some could be burned at 40, some at 32. Then, I remembered I had some old Traxdata 16x which Nero said were 32x and burned them at 32x and had no reading problems with any other drive. So nope, this baby never burned at 48 x.
I'm writing to MSI support right now.
And no, my cdrw came only with Nero retail CD, manuals and audio cable. No blanks

For starters try to use the latest Nero versio 5.5.10.20 and also the latest winaspi driver from adaptec's site. What makes me suspicious is that the nero my cdr came bundled with recognizes my cdr as "atapi 52xMax" not MSI or something like that. I checked nero's web site and I found out that MSI CR52-A2 isn't yet supported! I found though your cd-writer mentioned there. So maybe your bundled version wasn't fully supporting your cdr and using the latest version could correct any problems. Also you could try to flash the latest firmware again. By the way: HOw did you update the firmware. Made a dos boot disk? How?

I have a Windows Millenium bootable CD and I use it to boot into DOS. I used to have a DOS boot disk for situations that required REAL DOS(that is, DOS used and available with Windows 98/ME) but floppies aren't so reliable. I guess making a boot disk from a new fresh floppy could do the trick for you. check out www.bootdisk.com
So yes, I unpacked the archive downloaded from MSI into a temp folder, and after i entered DOS I ran the update utility as explained in the document from the archive file.(It has a command line...) Now my cdrw is also recognized as a CDRW 48xMAx so I guess MSI doesn't have much to do with the insides of the burner, I heard they rely on other CDRW makers, and they just come with the brand. I really don't know anything for sure about this.
My Nero is already 5.5.10.20
MSI support didn't answer so far. They just gave me an automated response X( so far.
I'm installing the adaptec 4.71a2 aspi driver right now and I'll keep you posted with the results.
Cheers

About recording speed: Mine CR52-A2 lets me write at 52x on my "SilverCircle" 48x validated CDRs! I also checked the copied cds for errors and they check out perfectly ok!So, I don't really have any problems except this "recognition" problem which makes you feel like having a cheap no name product...
