Hi!

A few days ago I bought a new rig, works great exept when i shall play games.
First I thought that I needed som new drivers. I downloaded the newest drivers from the manufatcurers, even bios, but nothing happened. Still it won?t play games. I?ve also tried other games, still the same bloody problem!
This is what happend: I start the game and play for about 1-10 min. Suddenly the game stops and shuts down. Sometimes a messege pops up and says something like: An error has eccoured and will shut down, sorry for the inconvinience. Sometimes the whole computer shuts down and restarts.

So, has anyone an idea what this strange problem is all about. What shall i do?

what slots are ur ram in ... i made mistake at first of having 1 & 3 the wrong way .. i thought slot 1 was edge of board .. but its nearest the cpu .. lol .. anyway .. did u check the msi memory test page for the recommend slots and configuration ..

Well I have mine in slot 1, next to the cpu. Checked the recomended memory page and found only the 256 mb memory from Twinmos , I have the one with 512mb

isnt twinmos in pairs .. lol .. sorry besides the point .. if ur stick of twinmos is double-sided it could be a problem .. the board dosent like some brands when double-sided ..

i assume the 256mb stick they mention they had in slot 1 .. u could as a trial put ur stick in slot 3 to see if it makes a diff .. but u deff need memtest86+ the standard version wont work on 64 bit athlons ..

if u have some other ram sticks u might like to try one of them to see if memtest will run .. same applies to another psu with better 12v rateings .. if u have or can get hold of one to test with

When I buy from a local dealer, they love me. When I go back with a problem, they look at me like I'm nuts when I describe the problem. :rolleyes_anim:

Like I bought a case with a built in power supply from one dealer here. Two days later, the power supply dies. I take the whole system back in. They want to know what I did to blow the power supply. Heck, I just plugged in the cables! They give me that look.

I bought a Rage Fury video card from a local dealer. They said it is a great card, no problems. I install it, the system boots into Windows 98 and locks up every time. I call the dealer, they say bring in the whole system so they can check it. I run the whole system to the dealer. They say "oh, yeah, the Rage Fury has driver issues". After charging $50 to tweak it to get it to boot (they changed the screen resolution), they tell me to check ATI's site for future driver updates. They would not give me a refund or replacement as they insisted the card was not defective. A few months later with continued stability issues, I get ATI to send me a replacement Fury. The replacement worked flawlessly.

I've learned much more in forums like these than from any local computer dealer. The dealers in my area just want to make the sale. If they sell you something defective, they'll go out of their way to blame me or some other component for the problem. They'll charge me a fee to diagnose the problem, and then mis-diagnose the problem and cost me more. o_0 o_0

I do my homework on the internet. I buy from a reputable online dealer, like Newegg. If I have a problem, I go to great forums, like this one, where I can get an honest answer. If I cannot resolve the issue with the forum's help, I call the reputable online dealer and they gladly refund my return, no questions asked (except for "what was the problem"). Much less grief than hauling my system into a local dealer where they can nose around my system, look at my bank accounts, and short out something while I'm at home waiting for their call. :shocking: :shocking:

I guess after all of that, what I am trying to say is I do not trust the local dealers around here. :nooo:

generally most ppl run memtest for an hour or two error free b4 they safely say the ram is stable .. if it passes that then chances are its soundcard or psu related problems that are causing ur crashes .. u didnt mention if u have audiology or not .. if u suspect the psu disconnect all but essentials from the power and try running like that to see if it makes a diff

Sorry, but memtest isn't a 100% guarantee that the ram is fine....
I have seen users running 24 hour passes without problems and it was still the ram....
The only thing you can trust memtest on AMD 64bit CPU's is that when it does error your ram is bad....
But no way you can be sure it's ok just because memtest didn't detected problems....
They only way to be 100% sure is replacing ram when all other options have been tried....
But crashing during gaming and not elsewhere seems to be PSU related to me, or it would crash on other things as well....

@Nutty,

Yep, it's too bad that a lot of dealers are rotten apples....I see them all to often.....
How ever, it's not the majority of dealers....

How long shall I do the test. So long it has been on for about 5 hours and it says that it found 45 errors ;-((

Is the test bulletproof? I mean shall I just throw away my memory and try another one?

If it errors you are sure they are not good for your board.
They could be allright in e.g. P4 or Athlon-32, but they are not OK for the AMD64 CPU...
Try other memory....some old stick of PC-2100 or other brand, then test again...

mine does that, found out its the onboard audio, on software its fine, but the moment i switch to hardware im restarted

im no expert but the A64's are prone to be very memory fussy because of the on-die controller ... therefore any errors during memtest86 is a bad thing and suggests either the memory is imcompatable or that the timings and settings for that ram need loosening in the bios .. easiest thing would be changing the ram .. but u could try the timings if u wish to spend time testing .. and generally an hour or two would be enough to suggest problems or not in memtest

Think I solved the problem. I changed my Twinmos 512mb ddr400 to ddr333 and now it runs smoth as hell.
So it?s not a psu problem it?s just the mobo who doesn?t like Twinmos ddr400. :nooo:

Shall I try to change the timing or something to run it on ddr400, Is someone else havin the same problem as I am?

ive seen Twinmos memory mentioned a few times .. u could maybe run @ ddr400 by loosening the timings in the bios .. but im no expert their .. i just run mine on auto .. u need a memory guru .. im sure someone will guide u thru it but its good to hear u having a working pc now .. hope u get lots of enjoyment

512M TwinMOS M2G9J16AGATT9F081AA4T TwinMOS DS TMD7608F8E50D is OK TwinMOS chips.
I ran that stick for months. 100% stabil.
But 2 sticks was not. 2nd TwinMOS stick has M-Tech chips

I got rid of both my TwinMOS RAM and got Kingston(infineon chips) instead.

But if I losen up the timings, is there any chans the memory will break down?
What timings shall I run, should I just try some?
