Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing an issue with my MSI Creator Z16P (B12UHST) and would appreciate any insights before sending it for servicing.

Problem Description:
My laptop suddenly froze during normal usage (no heavy workloads). A forced restart was necessary.
Immediately after restarting, the laptop’s fans started spinning constantly at high speeds, even under low CPU/GPU load.
The CPU performance cores (Intel Core i9-12900H) now frequently reach very high temperatures (>95°C), causing thermal throttling even at moderate workloads (~25% CPU usage).

Troubleshooting Steps Already Done:
Reset BIOS settings to defaults and updated BIOS to latest version (E15G1IMS.10C, released 2024-02-22).
Performed multiple EC resets (using the EC reset hole and power button on the device).

The BIOS and MSI Center both show the EC firmware updated correctly with the BIOS. However, the issue persists.

Has anyone experienced similar symptoms? Could this issue be related to the Embedded Controller firmware or possibly a hardware malfunction triggered by the sudden system freeze?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I proceed with sending my device to MSI for deeper inspection.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Benjamin

The fans could also be controlled by MSI Center Pro, try to clean install it first.
Use the clean center master to remove MSI Center Pro, and download the latest version from Microsoft store.
If the issue remains after that, you would need to send the laptop to the service center, it might need to replace the thermal paste.

Hey, thank you very much for your reply. Just re-installed MSI Center Pro. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

I open the device to make sure the fans are clean and run some additional stress tests. The thing gets unreasonably hot even under moderate load. CPU cores reach 90-97 °C very quickly. I am afraid that there is an an issue with the Embedded Controller (EC), mainboard VRM, or a fault in firmware-controlled thermal/power delivery systems.

Do any of you have experience with MSI's post-warranty repair service? Is it worth sending the device in?

Is it sudden change in temperature? How long have you been using this laptop? It might be time to clean the fans, air vents, and apply new thermal paste to keep the system cool. Intel’s 13th and 14th generation processors are facing unstable voltage issues, which can cause high temperatures and damage. These problems are usually fixed with a BIOS update if provided by the manufacturer. However, since your laptop has an Intel 12th generation processor, it isn’t affected by these issues, so updating the BIOS probably won’t make a difference in your case.
