I just started seeing this issue after downloading the NVIDIA app. I'm using a GS 66 Stealth. Now the orange light is always on. I know this isn't a huge deal but it is annoying that it's suddenly started and I can't seem to find a fix for it. I can hear a fan going at all times now, although the cpu has also been running hotter for some reason so I'm not sure which fan it is. The main apps using the dGPU in task manager are Desktop Window Manager and Client Server Runtime Process. I have both of these set to power save under graphics settings. A couple other apps appear sometimes too like Edge which is also set to power save. Anyone else dealing with this?

My MSI Crosshair 15 B12UGSZ always had this problem in Windows 11. I disabled the arc services and suddenly the orange button became white. By disabling the arc services the arc application did not run anymore. I never managed to get the white button to fix in Windows. I moved to linux in September, and linux does handle this perfectly fine. It switches between white and orange a few times. When i am on desktop and do some internet or low task stuff it keeps white. When i open steam it becomes orange when i close steam it changes to white again. I actually wrote about this subject in my linux topic, if you scroll down you can read about it. I can repost the video if you want (the switching in linux, pretty awesome)

In windows i tried everything, closing steam and all other background apps without success. Guess you have to live with it in Windows.

As far as I know, you can use MSI Center's Hardware Monitoring to determine which fan is running. However, I guess your laptop supports Dragon Center, which is why you said you can't determine it. If your model is the GS66 Stealth 10Sx, I remember that the fan starts spinning at around 50 degrees Celsius. So, you can use HWinfo to check if the GPU temperature reaches around 50 degrees before the fan starts spinning. If you didn't have this issue before, I suspect that the thermal paste might have aged, causing it to be ineffective in reducing the GPU temperature, which makes the fan work harder. You can use Time Spy to check if your GPU performance has decreased to see if there's an issue with the thermal capability. You can also use Cinebench R20 to check the CPU. If the performance does decrease after checking, you might want to try replacing the thermal paste.

You’ve certainly peaked my interest. Gonna look more into Pop OS. If you’re familiar with Blender, do you know if it runs well in Pop?

I remember hearing a light fan noise whenever the orange light would appear for longer than a second, but the CPU is also idling at around 50 now and just browsing can send it passed 60. I’m guessing I’m hearing both fans most of the time now. It’s usually subtle, but still noticeable. I tried taking the back panel off a couple weeks ago to spray the fans directly, but for the life of me I couldn’t get anything under it. I’m considering going to the place I bought it to see if they can get it off and then probably apply a new thermal paste because I’ve never done that before.

I am not using it, but it should work just fine under linux.

Edit: Here a video for you and look at the power button :D ->

Funny isn't it, a corporation like Microsoft fails to do this while Linux handles it perfectly fine. It never worked like this for me in Windows 11.

I have the same PC and the same problem that has driven me mad. I'd bet money your problem isn't fixed. If it's the problem I have, these suggestions aren't even in the right ballpark. Your main problem is that your dGPU won't enter the "L1 link state". This is controlled by a few things, it seems, but mostly the ASPM (Active State Power Management) and your Windows Power Plan. I've invested at least 100 hours into this problem. I've reinstalled windows several times, which always fixes it. But eventually it starts again. I've tried everything you can think of. Drivers, clean installs, BIOS tinkering, loading optimized defaults, tons of research online etc. This is an extremely common problem with the 2020 MSI laptops. Especially the GS 66 Stealth, which we both have. I have the GS 66 Stealth 10SF i7-10750h RTX 2070 Max-Q.

I've finally found what triggers it, for me at least. Plugging in an external monitor through my thunderbolt/USB-C hub. Once I do that, the light rarely turns white, it's almost always orange. Before I spend a bunch of time trying to help, is it still not turning white? When mine is white, the laptop will run on battery for about 4 hours. When it's orange, it will run for about an hour at the most.

Also, your overheating is from 2 things. The paste they use is terrible, I think they used one that thermally degrades at high temps. I've started using Gelid GC Extreme. I recommend it and repasting your CPU and dGPU at least once a year. The second is you need to undervolt your CPU, especially if you have the i7 or bigger. It's a meme that the "h" in i7-10750h stand for "Hot as Hell". Let me know if you still need help.
