I have a MSI B450m Gaming Plus Motherboard with a Ryzen 5 2600. I just bought a Ryzen 7 5800x, but I need to know if I need to update my BIOS first. I know you can fry your motherboard if you do not actually need a BIOS update, so I want to make sure. HELP PLEASE

I originally thought I had to download a new bios and install it after I installed my new cpu, but of course I was wrong because you're supposed to update your bios before putting in the new cpu. When I had the new cpu in, my screen was black so I tried to do a bios flashback which ended up doing nothing. I then tired to put my old cpu back in which led to the screen being black once again. I'm lost and frustrated and would appreciate any solutions anyone has! Thank you! (I have a MSI B450M Gaming Plus)

The Ryzen 5 2600 runs with Bios Version 10 (from 2018) and above, whereas the 5800 needs the latest BIOS (from 2022). So yes, you definitely have to update. I would not worry about "frying the board". I'm updating BIOS for 30 years now, and never ever "fried" a board with it. Just make sure there is no power outage during BIOS update, and don't try to manually interrupt BIOS update. Good luck! :)

I have a MSI B450M Gaming Plus with a Ryzen 5 2600. I just installed my new CPU, a Ryzen 7 5800x. When I turned my PC on it started and the fans started spinning, but my screen is black? Before I installed my new CPU I downloaded the latest BIOS, so that I could update it, but with the screen black and can't even get to it. PLEASE HELP
you need to use your Ryzen 5 2600 to do the Update not the Ryzen 7 5800x as it has no idea what the newer one is you need the BIOS updated first so your trying to do this in Backwards order.

Yep, the AGESA microcode for the new CPU needs to be in place already when you put in the new CPU.
So you need to update the BIOS as the last thing before taking out the old CPU and putting in the new one.

Try using a different USB pen drive and redo the flash bios button again. Did you see any LED flashing during the process?

Yes it was flashing. Flashed for about 4 or 5 minutes then stopped so I figured I was good. Then I tried turning it back on and nothing happened.

Definitely try different pen drive, don't use USB 2.0 pen drive and format to right FAT32 format.

which debug LED are you stuck on? does your keyboard LED react when you press CAPS lock and NUM lock?
if the LED indicators are lighting up, that means the system is booting up but it's not giving video output for some reason.
you can still flash BIOS with flash BIOS button even when you have no output.

Right, B450M Gaming Plus has USB Flashback already, didn't think it had. Yeah, you should be able to get the BIOS flashed with that.
If the problems persist, please list all your hardware in detail, RAM model, GPU model, PSU model, drive model, and state of EZ Debug LEDs.

Yes, you have to update the BIOS to the latest version. The most convenient way is to update with the old CPU still in there, then you can do it via M-Flash in the BIOS.
Otherwise, if you put in the new CPU without having updated before, you're gonna have to resort to the Flash BIOS Button, which is more of a hassle.
