DRAM Light, CPU light, black screen.

Hey,

(Not sure if this is the right place for this thread?)

So I swapped out some parts in my own build yesterday from ASRock board to MSI board and from Intel to AMD.

I thought I would easily get into windows after assembly and just reinstall everything from there. If not, I have a USB drive with Windows on it. How could there be any issue..?

Oh boy.

I don’t even know where to start, so I guess I will start where I am right now.

I turned my PC on 20 minutes ago and the CPU light and the DRAM light are both on. No screen. All the fans are going. This started happening yesterday night after I finally managed to reinstall windows after 5hrs of different kinds of problems, I was just installing my old browser when the entire screen froze up and nothing was working except for the fans. Couldn’t move my mouse, no task manager etc. no blue screen either, just completely frozen.

My specs:

- 7500f (bought used)
- MSI B650 Tomahawk WiFi
- G.Skill S5 5600mhz 28CL (x2) <- Not AMD version?
- Corsair RM750x <- I’m using only one 1x8 pin connector to CPU.
- Nvidia 4070 Super.

What have I tried:

1. I tried taking out one of the ram sticks.
2. I tried the CMOS button on the back of the mobo.
3. I tried turning it on and off again (50 times!)

Considering there is no screen, I don’t know how to get a bios update, if you think that might be causing the problem. And I also don’t have a laptop.. not sure how to solve that one right now if it gets to this.

My best bet right now is that I need to get new RAM sticks, but that’s not easy to solve atm.

Any suggestions?

Both DRAM and CPU light turned off after I reseated ram and did the CMOS button again.

But there is still no screen and my USB peripherals are not lighting up.

The fans are going like crazy, also on the GPU where I have my displayport cable, so I don’t think there’s an issue there.

You can update your BIOS via the motherboard.

Download the new BIOS version, unzip it, rename the file which doesnt end with txt to MSI.ROM and then format your usb stick to FAT32 and make sure it doesnt use GPT for it.
Then copy the renamed file into the usb stick without folders or anything just the file, then check either in the manual or on the I/O Shield which USB-Port is meant for Flashing the BIOS. Plug it in then turn on only the PSU, but keep your PC off and then press the Flash Button which should be next to the ports somewhere, its a really small button, press that for a few seconds and that should start to blink for 4-10 minutes after that in my case it didnt boot up automatically, if thats the same in your case turn off your pc via the ON/OFF button of the PC by holding it for longer.

Then boot it up, if you get a black screen after that, you should at least see that there is a green LED for the booting device not detected on the motherboard instead of the CPU and DRAM LEDS. Change the cables or try another monitor or the TV, in my case it didnt work with HDMI on my 4k 60 hz Samsung monitor but with DisplayPort it worked on my 144hz AOC Monitor.

Here is a video for the formatting part:

Thank you for the reply.

I did everything you said and I am being met with a black screen and 0 LEDs currently.

All my fans are going like crazy but my USBs are not getting power (no lights) and HDMI to the TV didn’t work.

I let it work for like 15 minutes with all the LEDs off, nothing. When I restarted it, yellow LED is now on.

I read several places that my ram should be fine even thought it’s XMP and not Expo but maybe that’s just not correct?

But I did get the PC on yesterday with the same ram, I even reinstalled my entire windows before it stopped working.

Edit: I also just noticed that a white light flashed once when I turned off the PC again.

Sorry for the late reply, I was quiet busy the last several days, but are you sure that the FLASH Button blinked for minutes? And did you make sure that the PC was OFF when and the PSU ON when you tried to update the BIOS via the FLASH Button and that the BIOS Flash blinks for minutes?. And yellow sugessts technically ram issue, but i wonder if you have already considered the steps I mentioned now.

My turn with a late reply!

So, first off, yes, I did all that, but what I had to do was buy used RAM off a marketplace type site that was on the QVL list and reseat the CMOS battery.

PC rebooted and everything was fine on sunday 15th. Because everything looked fine I put my old RAM in because it was faster than the QVL ram. And everything was fine, so I sold the QVL RAM on wednesday.

Yesterday night, several days with gaming and usage for long hrs with no issues, my PC froze up again, crashed, restarted, and started a cycle of crashing like 5 more times.

So I reinstall the BIOS to a slightly older version and everything was fine again. For a couple of hrs, until it crashed again, and this time I’m entirely back to square one where my PC is refusing to turn on and both my CPU light and DRAM light is on and no screen or anything is showing!

My PC worked for one week with no issues and now nothing works but nothing has changed inbetween and I don’t even know if it’s the RAM, CPU, mobo, windows or evil faires in my walls at this point.

I think the best advice would be to just burn the whole thing and hope no evil spirits are released into our world..

Hmm, I am also out of my wits here, however from a logical standpoint, it seems that your CPU is fine, since it worked with the temporary RAM, which indicates that the RAM modules are probably defect or maybe not compatible with your motherboard (maybe worth a research on your side if thats the case).

Are there any blue screens on crash? Because sometimes the status codes of blue screens can be helpful, if they are specific enough to tell you that its probably a memory issue hence indicating that its a RAM problem.

Other than that I have no clue either.

Figured out that the CPU was the problem, I am now using a completely new 7600 and the old RAM and everything is fine.

It was explained to me that maybe the silicone was the issue.
